I have 2 new maxs.Both with tacks!!! The last couple of 1 foot snow storms 1 goes up to camp no problem.The other one wont make it.It runs great but just seems to have a hard time climbing a hill with new snow.On the groomed trail they go the same.Still pulls a load of people and supplies but only on packed trail.The other one one just goes in snow great!! ANY IDEAS????

What is happening to the machine? Is it sinking,spinning out,or just running out of power?

just spinning and sinking.have tryed full throttle and a little,just starts digging in.
ITS THE FASTER OF THE 2 MACHINES!!!Im trying everthing,tire pressure,chain adj.,belt, will try climbing to camp again tomorrow.

I got a 1997 buffalo, I put tru tracks on it and it goes so so in snow ,would 15inch or 18 inch track make it go through deep powder better .The buffalo is very heavy campare to my old max but I can't put the tracks on the max because it has the old hollow axles,it's a 1970.Any ideas on how to get the buffalo going places?

Doug, tell us a little more about models, engine, accessories installed, etc. Sounds to me like the machine you are having trouble with you might be a loaded 950T or maybe a 900T. Sounds to me like you have too much weight and too much Horse Power. Sure would be nice if RI would give us that 18" track the Avenger uses. We need to remember our physics. Snow machines are designed to spin the track fast and as the snow goes away, the machine drops down keeping the track in contact with the snow (snow mobiles can dig holes deeper than they can get out of also) - not so with our skid steers. When the snow gets thrown behind us, we are left sitting on that big wide flat bottom. Spinning tires are a NO NO. Also, the more the machine weighs and carries, the quicker it bottoms out.

Try using just a little throttle and get the machine as light as possible and see if that helps.

Anonymous (with the buffalo), I'm not a fan of tru traxx because they are too narrow and made of hard plastic. Might be fine on packed snow conditions, but in powder and soft stuff, they lack the flotation needed (all those spaces between links cut contact area) to keep you on top.

The 15" rubber track that RI uses would help a lot, but you are right, the Buffalo is a little heavy and will not perform as well as the other Max models. It is fairly easy to get too much weight in a IV also. An 18" or 20" track is needed on heavier machines and those machines who need to carry more weight. Maybe you should consider duals and a track to span both tires.

I have a matching pair of max2.ONE just climbs the hill better in deep snow.They both have 18hp BS.WITH 15 INCH RI RUBBER TRACKS.When the trail is packed a little they perform about the same.When we do break trail we only have one person in the machine and nothing else.ALSO have one machine not charging,any common problem with the charging system?They both are new this year.THANKS

Doug, Don't know what the answer is if both machines are the same model. Only thing I can think of is one driver is lighter or sits in a different position, but if all drivers have the same performance it has to be something in one of the machines. How many hours on these machines?

There should be a fuse somewhere that controls the charging. It used to be (on a 1995 Max II 600T) an inline fuse on the white wire between the solenoid and the engine. I do not know exactly where it is on the newer models.

I have a 2004, Max IV 25 hp, with RI original equipment rubber tracks, bearing cages, and all necessary official equipment. I am certainly glad I did not compromise with narrower tracks.

I love the tracks, but they work far from perfectly. In any deep, fresh snow it gets stuck on any grade that is not downhill. The problem is that the hull of the Max IV floats the ATV in the snow, and the tracks dig out trenches once the ATV halts. We have a snow cat that can compress the snow and make tracks for the Max ATV, but we wish the Max was self-sufficient...our original intention was for a back up when the snow cat was down for maintenance. After spending lots of thousands of dollars, I really wish I hadn't invested in the tracks and related hardware. Now I need a more powerful winch and more trees to tie onto.

For more solid or icy snow, and plowed snowy roads, the tracks are a hoot. But it is really embarrassing to be stuck where 2WD "regular" ATVs can go (it happens all the time). This is a problem even with an unloaded ATV and a 175 pound experienced driver.
