I'd like to mount a trolling motor on my Max II, and would appreciate commentary and/or suggestions from folks who have done so. It appears that I will have to fabricate some type of mount on the stern, and was wondering about what types of materials would work best and not cause damage to the body.

Thanks in advance.

Bud

Bud, you can mount the trolling motor on the front without any damage. Its very easy, but you will most likely have to turn the head of the motor around 180 degrees. All you will need is 2 pieces of wood. 1 needs to be 4" to 6" long and about 1/2" thick. The other needs to be 6" to 8" long and 3/4" thick. You will put the wood on the body where the lower and upper bodies meet in the middle in front. The bigger/longer wood will be on bottom and the smaller/shorter wood will be on top. Now you just put trolling motor bracket around both pieces of wood and tighten down. I use a small trolling battery and place it in the floor and run the cables over the top and connect. If you need more help, let me know and I can come up with a pic if needed.

We run our winch off of the winch recpticals we have a plug in the front and back of our argo.It works great you might be able to do something like this for your motor the remote winch button runs the motor in forward and reverse.Word to the wise do not leave the winch hooked plugged into the front and run the trolling motor from the back we learned the hard way it burnt the winch motor and contactor in about 3 minutes and the winch was just bought. We also have remote steering I bought the trolling motor at a flee market for $15.We have since installed a marine battery selector so both of the winch plugs are not hot at the same time we figured if we did it once it would happen again.I know the Max are different but it works great off of the Argo's battery.

Later,Dan

Thanks for the suggestions. I have a front mounted winch that I put on recently; I wonder if I can figure out a way to attach the motor to that? I'll play with that idea this weekend and see how I can make this little motor fit on the front.

I am planning to add a Minn Kota Power Drive deck mount motor on my Max II. I am planning on using the Minn Kota quick release mount plate and attaching it to the cargo rack at the back. I am waiting for the spring sale prices on the motor first. I'll see how it works out.

Attaching it to the winch did not work; there is no place that the transom type mount on the trolling motor can clamp on to. I considered fabricating a plate onto the rear cargo rack, but the motor shaft is not long enough to clear below the bottom of the hull.

I decided to shelve the idea until I decide that I want to buy a new trolling motor with a longer shaft.

Bud, I was going to use a standard motor on the back but after I saw the power drive motor with the bow mount and foot pedal control, I thought it would be better instead of extending the tiller handle with the Minn Kota extension handle. I am thinking about a 42"/46" shaft because I have a game rack on top of the cargo rack which makes it set higher. I'm thinking about 40 lbs thrust minimum. How much thrust are you considering?

I like the idea of a front mount on the Max just because I think it would work better. Plastic unbreakable shaft for sure if it gets mounted at the back.
