OK, my 400JLO seems to be running in tip top condition. I have run with synthetic oils in my others Attexes with a high fuel/oil ratio ex. amsoil 100:1
Since throwing a NOS 400 in to my Chief, I decided to use "regualr" 2 stroke oil with a 20:1 mix as per owner's manual instructions. I noticed that the exhaust pipes off the heads and the pipe running to the muffler are dripping oil...especially when you really get on the throttle.
Does this sound like carb problems or fuel mixture problems?
I've changed the plugs and they seem to be igniting fine.

Sounds like a typical 2 stroke running 20:1! If the plugs are looking fine, it's not the carb. I've seen alot of talk about oil mixtures on this board and nobody seems to agree on what mixture to run. I used to run 20:1 and then 32:1. I am in the process of switching to synthetic. I met a guy who runs ultralights and he uses Pennsoil synthetic at 50:1. I figure he's more concerned about engine failures than me. I think I will run synthetic at 40:1 just be safe. There's definately alot less smoke with less oil. Everyone seems to agree that 20:1 was necesary with the old oil and fuel of the 1970's. |

Another tip:
I have a jet boat with twin 85hp 2 strokes. The dealer said to make sure you use low octane gas, because the chemicals they now use to increase the octane rating will actually break down the oil and screw up the mixture.
