My winch instruction booklet doesn't recomend it.I would guess the bouncing would slowly loosen it.I don't know about argos but max machines shouldn't be tied down by the bodies, axles or tires only.I'll run a tie across my body as a saftey catch but not snugged when I transport in my pick-up

In the past few years I have had the brakes on a winch fail twice. the small Warn winch (which I still think are the cream of the crop) uses a plastic gear that stripped from overloading. As Dennis says DO NOT TIE DOWN THE BODY, put a strap or big hook around the axles and tie it down like somebody is going to rear end you ,cause they might. Happy Riding W. Philip Cox

I have a buddy of mine works at worn winch in portland oregon worn makes several kinds of winches
there is some built as hoists they have internal brakeing sistems that are made for lifting so that the down force when something is pulling down it will lock and when he winch is turned on the brake releaces and will let the gears and back drag do the work some have internal brakes some have external and some have both as a back up but there is a deffient difference from a winch and a hoist

Skip Saul, typos or not, you,ve got it right. There is a difference between a hoist and a winch and we will be happier longer if we don,t use them for the wrong purposes. But sometimes....if nobody is watching...
