Does anyone know the laws regarding 6x6 Argo's and where they can and cannot drive in Ontario? I looked at the MTO's website and they make reference only to regular 4 wheel ATV's. I just bought this argo, fully insured it and licenced. For example, can I drive on public access secondary gravel roads (in Northern Ontario)? Argos are definately unique as nobody seems to know what to do with them at the insurance office (fixed) or the licence bureau (fixed)!! :-)
Thanks.
Mike.

Hi Mike, You are right,nobody seems to know what to do with our 6 wheelers. I own a Max not an argo but for your Questions they are the same. The Ontario Government did not change the " off road vehicles act" but starting last fall our 6 and 8 wheelers became covered by the act by a change in regulations. Threfore License and insce. and helmets became required for the first time! at all times ,no exceptions! Every municipality is different but the Ont. Gov. gave them the right to pass local laws to allow us and Quads to ride on the side of most roads except for 400 series highways or the Q.E.W. or Don Valley Parkway etc. Call the O.P.P. to see if we are allowed on the side of the road in the municipality that you want to ride in. Easy answer is ---if Quads are allowed so are we,but need a one time only license and a helmet. Happy riding Philip

What about general use crown land? Lots of it seems like prime AATV territory; but there are no existing trails as... heh heh, 4 wheelers couldn't get anywhere heh heh.. Is Ontario Crown Land fair game?

I actually went to the MNR to get mine licensed and they turned me away. This was after speaking with the OPP at the Sportsmans Show, so I am not sure if they really know what is up. So what I do is make sure it is licensed, put a slow moving sign on the back, and off you go. As they told me at the MNR, they consider the Argo a farm implement (in fact was included in the same section of their policy book along with tractors.
As for Crown Land, usually open for business unless it is under some Green act or is a snowmobile trail.

Changes to Ontario's
Off-Road Vehicles Legislation/Regulations

Off-road vehicles (ORVs) now have more access to the shoulder and paved portions of some Ontario highways. These new regulations, effective July 31, 2003, apply exclusively to one category of ORV. This is defined as an off-road vehicle that:

* has four wheels, the tires of which are all in contact with the ground;
* has steering handlebars;
* has a seat that is designed to be straddled by the driver; and
* meets requirements of federal Motor Vehicle Safety Act (MVSA) and American National Standards Institute (ANSI standard).

The above was taken from the Ontario MOT website.

Regarding ORV use of Crown Land: Myself and 2 others have recently purchased 18 acres of Recreational Land just north of MacTier (30 minutes south of Parry Sound Ontario). The best part is this land gives us access to 10's of 1000's of acres of Crown Land. We will be setting up a ARGO/MAX destination campground with 4/8 hour loops. This country was made for 6/8 wheelers, marsh, swamps, lakes, rivers, rock, bush, hunting, fishing etc. We checked with the MNR to make sure everything was OK, they said there was no problem using the land as long as we didn't cut down trees . We could mark routes with colored ribbon, but couldn't cut down any trees to make a trail. The area has been harvested so its open enough that we should have no problem making routes, or following GPS coordinates. Can't wait for spring!

Len, Ray, thanks for the quick replies.

No shortage of crown up that way for sure! Ray; sounds like you have found a little piece of Ontario AATV heaven up there. Thanks for offering to share; keep us posted on when you're hosting an AATV event.

Salamander- your profile is a little thin. I live in eastern Ontario. The Argo dealer here sells a two wheel plastic trailer that floats good with a load of camping gear. I posted pics. on this site somewhere last year. Yes, much cheaper than ODGs trailer. If you want to be invited when we have a ride .let me know. We have lots of public land here.

Great news for ATV riders in Prince Edward County Ontario! City council PASSED an ATV By-Law last night allowing four wheelers to be driven slowly on the shoulder of most streets and roads by licensed drivers.If I ever break down out in the boonies it will be easier for a four wheeler to get to me. haha
