When I first got interested in AATV.S I went to an Argo dealer and test rode a Conquest I think they look great. Then I saw how much it would cost for one outfitted the way I wanted $14000 I took a look at the owners manual and the first dozen pages were don't dos dont go in water on a windy day dont brake hard on the downhill dont go into water fast. It was then I realized the Eng is in the front and what that meant in the water and I said I can do better than this.
I Figured and drew plans measured and drew more plans and finally came up with something I could build and would do what I wanted. Essentially I wanted a 8WD boat that would haul all my stuff and I could fish all day long or cross a lake and go up some trails with out fear of hard braking or windy lakes. It would have to be big sturdy with high sides and power itself thru the water, Not nose heavy but balanced.
This is what I have built, the lower frame is formed c channell 5 in by ten foot 10ga four pieces to hold axles and brgs. so the lower frame is 48 in wide by ten foot long on top of this I built a sand rail like frame from 2in .095 tubing with all the cross bracing a folding windshield and rear roll bar. dont want them in the way when casting from the boat. on top of this is a removable roof rack for the light stuff
made from half in conduit. In the center of this is a VW IRS trans axle the axles come out in the middle of the 10 foot frame so there dead center of axle 2 and 3 I then fabbed a 12 in stubby shaft and bolted it to the transaxle put a disc brk and an rc 60x15 sprocket on it. It drives a jack shaft with a 30 tooth sprocket at the other end of this shaft are two 15 tooth sprocketts one each for the center axles. then axle to axle.
Now for the hull I bought 3 sheets of 5x10 5052 aluminum .092 paid to have them bent to my measurements. then it was 8 hrs of welding with a spool gun on a wire feed welder. The hull is 48in wide at the bottom slightly veed the sides go up 24 in then bend outward to form a 12in fender at 92 degrees. The entire edge is capped with 3/4 alum conduit its 13.5 long and 6 foot wide a good boat size. it has two bench seats that move and clamp where you want and lay flat. The cushions are velcrowed on so I can use them in the tent under the sleeping bags. I also bought a seadoo 650 pump for the rear to propel it thru the water.
So far Ive got the frame in the hull all the bolt holes and axle holes are cut in and the trailer is made tilting ramps and elect brakes.
with a big gang box. Just waiting for somemore cash about $2000 invested so far. Ive got a CB a fish finder and CD player ready to go into the dash. |

I can speak for Chris and say he has a good looking machine. I have seen lots of his pictures.
I am building my own machine also but I am still at the frame stage of my project. I hurt my back about 3 months ago and since I went back to work I am now working a lot of overtime and haven't had time to work on it. My machine will be a 6x6 & also Have a Volkswagen engine in it. But I will be using an automatic with a custom designed locker in the automatic so both sides will pull. I will be using 28 inch tires with aluminum rims. And I am still planning on using belt drives instead of chain if it goes right. A little more expensive but I will save about 200 pounds in weight. |

Today I welded on brackets for two more headlights and some support tubes over the front end. Then I painted the trailer gloss black.
Going to add some fender support tubes as I noticed them vibrating during the trailer haul. |

Your barge looks interesting have you figured out mathmaticaly what its displacement is? or how much weight it will take to sink it?
You will have to know that and then calc. every load so its not overloaded. My atv will weight about 1200 lbs and will take 6000 to sink it. to the very lip of the hull. |

Today I welded on brackets for rear tail lights and a rear flood light on top of the rear roll bar. Then I welded in my shifter box on a bracket that reaches 12 inches toward the rear to just between the driver and pasenger in the front seat. Towed my rig with my new truck for the first time. What difference. |

hi I am new to this site and I need some help rebuilding this monster machine. (Tracks have been removed from tires as pictures show) I've been interested in 6 wheelers for years but I have never seen anything like this before. it seems like it must have been a prototype of some kind. Has anyone out ther ever seen anything like this before?    |

thanks: jeff & philip for the responding jeff the small tires are not that small they just look small cause the machine is big and don't forget it has rubber tracks and steel cleats that ride over the tires plus there is lots of room if I wanted to put bigger tires. philip: I haven't had it running yet. |

My company bought a spool gun so I welded in the mounts for the rear pump. and some fender supports. Here it is on the tilting trailer. Next will be a pivoting clamshell for reverse in the water and a plate under the pump to protect it from rocks and air suck back into the pump inlet. |

Your amphib project is really going to change in appearance when you get those 27x10 Mudlites installed.You should,nt have any problems if you install the # 80 chains. |

Ive moved 2200 miles and changed jobs now I no longer have access to a lathe and milling machine
so have paid for lathe work to the axles. going to pick up tue. 9-7 and then weld the lug bolts thru a 10 mm hole on the back of the bolt circle plate need to buy 8 # 80 chain sprockets 12 tooth with 1 3/8 bore for the axles. |

The chain & sprockets have arrived and now i can get this rig up on wheels and send some pics. bought 12 # 80 sprockets 12 tooth on a 1 3/8 bore & 30 feet of # 80 chain just need some master and 1/2 links and some 5/16 keyway |

The Tires are 27x10x12 mudlights I think they will work real good in sand, mud or rocky terain but does anybody have experience with them in the water? Whats your opinion of my project so far? any suggestions? |

I wanted the 12 in wide also but they would not fit on my trailer ramps.I also noticed that they are only 26.25 in diameter if I had known that I would have gotten 28 in tires there is still 1.25 in between tires even though there is 27.5 center to center of axles. My fenders are 11.5 wide so its a good fit. |

I have a friend that tried the 26x12x12 mudlites on his 6x6 ,and he told me that this tire won,t swim. He did say though, that he liked this tire in the mud. But, for an amphib he said to choose another tire that will swim. |

It will be interesting to find out what is faster running or not running the tires as I run the pump thru the water. I also found some aluminum with a wood grain vinal coating I will use for the dash and one of those sand rail alum gas tanks 10 inches by 40 inches 15 gallons side fill. I will also weld in a 1/4 in aluminum plate under the pump to protect it and stop any suck back from the pump. |

I really like the twin prop design like the Hydratrek uses. I,d be afraid of jet pump failure over time in the swamps and muddy places that we like to take our amphibs. |

Ray Kohls custom built the Bushwacker , all alluminum 6x6 that is in Readers rides and Restoration on this website. I told you wrong about the mudlite tires that he used on his 6x6. He was using 25x12x9. This is what he said about the Mudlite tires that he installed on his 6x6.

That is a fantastic machine! I look forward to watching the progress. Most AATVs are too limited on water for me, they are only just barely able to qualify as amphibs. This one looks like you said, a boat with wheels. Kinda going the opposite extreme! I only have one worry for you, I'm afraid it will be hard to turn because it's so long and the tires have deep tread. I hope I'm wrong. |

We will see, It has big car disc. brakes the rear brakes off a cadillac Baritz. right on the axle shaft from the tranny. Then there is a two to one reduction from the normal vw axle to a jack shaft. that will cut the speed in half and double the torq. |

Very easly but where would I post them? My camera will take 2.5 hrs of 8 megapixil. I have lots of films of camping trips and the rubicon trail, the sierras and Alabama hills in Calif. |

Just bought on ebay a set of one handle turning brakes for a sand rail if you push the handle one way it locks up the right brake, pull it the other way and it locks up the left. Going to mount it sideways and hook it to steering wheel so I will have a functional steering wheel. Also the stock VW master cyl is designed to work thru this turning brake so with a set of stock VW peddals installed I will have clutch brakes and gas. The push pull cable that turns the personal water craft pump will also be connected to the steering wheel. |

Just bought an 11 gallon spun aluminum gas tank, an air clutch and a Hyd. pump 32 gpm at 2000rpm
going to direct drive the clutch with a 1.5 to 1 ratio to turn on and off the hyd. pump which will drive the seadoo 650 pump to propel it thru the water or drive the 2250 watt 120vac generator I have. One hand hyd. valve detent in both directions. Will use Hyd. motors to drive the water pump to 4000 rpm and the generator to 3000 rpm got to go this route the water pump turns the opposit direction of the vw motor |

Just bought a motor for it, a running 69 1500 single port vw Its rated at 53 hp and 78 fpt. With the ratios I have thats 2445.3 fpt at the axle at 2600 rpm That should be decent for a 1300 lb vehicle. |

Installed the motor and the gas tank. I put the gas tank up in the nose just below the top lip and am going to build a alum. hood over the area in front of the wind shield. bolted in the turning brakes also. |

I bought a 55 amp alternator to replace the 14 amp generator, just about finished with the gas and brake lines and started with the dash. This summer is the big test, will have the motor running in about 30 days. |

Finished all the brake lines and blead them today. The vw brake pedal works real good locking both rotors and the dune buggy turning brakes hooked to the steering wheel work well also. |

I have been running it up and down the road now for several weeks. Floated it in the white river and drove thru the water. Turns great and still has 17" of verticle side out of the water. I have done about 30 mph so far on gravel roads. |
