Just a note regarding the "Otter"...The info above is correct: they're not amphibious, but they will pull any damn thing you want-ours is a '67 Ranger and I've dragged 24 foot long 32-36 inch diameter ash logs out of the woods with it. I also pulled an F-250 plow truck out of a ditch once with it. Slow, loud, friction drive with only the rear wheels. Similar to a Trackmax setup, probably... As for the hydraulics question, ours has a PTO point for this between the engine and thr tranny shift hump. As far as durability goes, I drive over aspen up to about 3" diameter. The bottom is 1/4" expanded metal mesh, the sides are 2"x12" planks. The only drawback is that if you throw a track it's kinda slow going shortening the front wheels to the rear (manually shortening the wheelbase) to get it back on. This was because of pilot error due to too-soft tires. Anyway, the thing is that this is a unit receiving about 250-300 hours of hard use/year, and it is ALL ORIGINAL: Nothing has broken on it since we bought it new. Something to think about, if you need a unit with some serious snort to it. |

DEAR PIKE HAVE YOU EVER DROVE A 6X6. I HAVE AND FOR 20 YEARS I'VE OWNED MANY RANGERS. THE RANGER WILL OUT PERFORM ANY MAX WITH HAVE THE HP. IT WONT FLOAT BUT IT WILL EASLY DO EVERYTHING YOU SAY IT WILL. THEY ARE BY FAR MUCH MORE RELIABLE THAN 6X6. AND VERY SIMPLE TO WORK ON. |

I had one of these for about 6 years. Sold it in 1992 for more than I paid for it. Yes, slow, loud but it would go where you pointed it. We had 3 guys on it once going through a swamp trail, the back was completely under water. One guy had to scramble to the front and stand as a front counterweight. The little Kohler kept chugging right on through! After I sold it, I never saw another one. I'd like to find one to rebuild. Don't really need it to get around, I have a Max with tracks. |
