I have been looking for a Max IV for quite some time and I have finally found one. It has one thing which is causing me concern. The middle and rear tires on the right side are rubbing on the body. The Max has the 26" tires and the extra bearings for a track set. All other tires have adequate clearance. Is there a way to adjust this or should I stay away from this one? Thanks |

John,
I haven't been here to Route6x6 for quite some time. Sounds to me like the body has become mis-shaped by maybe too much weight left in machine in hot temps.
At any rate, it can be fixed, but is a little cumbersome. Need to block the side you will be working on up so the weight of the machine is hanging from the lip above the wheels that are rubbing. Heat the plastic up at the bend with a heat gun and let the weight of the machine reposition the plastic. Need to put a block under the machine below the area you are moving so it doesn't drop too much. Need to go a little further than you think you need because the plastic has a memory and it will come back a bit.
All Max IVs prior to the new body are a little close on the middle wheel, but should have at least 1/2" clearance at the closest part with 26" tires at 3.5 PSI.
Another way I have used is to deflate the tire/tires in question and place a filler between the tire and the body (I have some 3/4" rubber stall pads in strips). Once the filler is in place, air the tire up to about 10PSI and heat the plastic from the inside. You will need to take the back seat out and if it has a roll cage, take the support bar loose from the plastic so it has no pressure on the area you are going to move.
Keep your heat gun moving so you don't melt the plastic and be sure to heat up the entire area you need to reshape.
You might have to reheat the area a couple of times over period of a month or so as due to the before mentioned memory of the plastic.
A couple of other things to check before plastic work: High air pressure will make circumference of tires bigger. Make sure tires have correct air and uniform circumference. A bearing could be gone allowing the axle to be out of position and a bent axle will cause a tire to rub intermittently.

Thanks, Jeff. Most everything going well in my life. Too busy in several projects. Still struggling with rehab on my 2002 shoulder replacement. I think the doctors should do their practicing before they are allowed to work on the public. Don't know why it has to be me to hear "Never had that to contend with before". Oh well.
Economy still tough here in Montana and Max sales are non existent.
I'll try to remember to check in more often. Really miss not having the email notification of posts. |
