What does everyone register there 6x6 as..???
Here in Maine I had to register My 6x6 3 times once as a boat for water once as a snowmobile or I was not allowed on the trails.. and again as an ATV. or I could not use it for off road... Now I'm being told the Warden services are going to give me a ticket becouse it is an amphibious not and ATV,SNOWMOBILE,BOAT.and the ATV clubs are trying to keep me off the trails and I less damage then any atv does besides I'm the one hauling land fill and repairing the trails that the other atv's are ripping up...
So I was wondering just what do you register your ATV'S AS...PLEASE RESPOND I NEED THE HELP.

I was also notified that my 6x6 is a class 3
I THINK IT IS A BUNCH OF BULL AND PEOPLE ARE JELOUSE... need feed back. please.

Lilchief - Yes it is a bunch of bull. The problem is, no one knows what these vehicles are and the rules are written for the traditional ATV. That only means a quad. What they don't understand is the fact that these Max and Argo 6x6s are the original (and only REAL) all terrain vehicles. They complain so much about land damage, then do not allow the most eco friendly ATV on the trails. I don't know what you can do except find other land or ride on private property that is open to all.

Hey Guy's, you think you got problems with a 6x6 or 8x8, most states haven't a clue what to do with a Trackster,some states exempt them on the basis of Ag Equipment. The problem is, no common registration requirements from state to state.

In Mississippi we have a registration headache, too. Anything that floats and uses "mechanical propulsion" in State waters must be registered as a motorboat (even a canoe with a trolling motor). However, when I tried to register my Argo I was told it is a vehicle, not a vessel, and cannot be registered as a boat. The word "amphibious" generates blank looks.

I also live in NH and have recently checked with the State OHRV dept/Fish & Game as to what to register a 6x6 as. The woman at the OHRV dept said: the machine(6x6) is covered under the laws for OHRV vehicles but..if it is to be used in the water it must be register as a water craft as well.

Here in NYS, I was told that I'd have to register it for each of the various uses...

With Tires, it's defined as an ATV in NY state.
With a Track, and ONLY when it has a track, it can be registered as a Snowmobile.
To take it in the water, even creeks and such, since it is motorized, it must be registered as a Boat.

NY has basically bans ATV use almost everywhere except your own land, but has LOTS and LOTS of snowmobile trails and legal rights. It's in your best interest in NY to get tracks and then your winter options are much wider.

As for a boat, I'm not concerned about that one, I don't go in water much.

Chris - I'm about to buy a Max IV in NY. Do you know of any public land where we can go 6x6? If they don't let you go anywhere what's the point of registering anyway? What do you have to do to register?

There are very few truly legal areas to ride in NYS. The state is very ATV unfriendly. Registration is for legal purposes only, and has little point except to pay the state for the privilage of not riding it anywhere. There are many forest areas that have logging roads, or access roads in them, it is possible, maybe not completely legal, but doable to ride them without too much problem.

Registration is easy, just take your bill of sale, title and insurance card to the DMV and register it as an ATV. Getting insurance isn't that bad, you just have to tell your agent what it is, sit for a few minutes watching the blank stare they give you, then just say "ATV". DMV will not allow you to register it without an insurance card, so make sure you have that.

I'm looking for more places to ride in NYS. There is a guy Jason who is in the area that also may know of some. Anyone interested in forming a NYS club for riding? Or hooking up with another?

Chris - thanks for the response. As soon as I get my machine (next couple of weeks) I plan to scoure the state for places to go. I'll let you know what I find. I also need to ask a buddy of mine that does a lot of dirtbiking about places he found. The registration thing really sounds bogus but I guess if you get stopped by police it gives them one less reason to hastle you if you have it. Do most 6x6ers out there bother to register?

I live in PA. You know ... the state that's most of NY's Southern and Western border. How about sharing the name of your insurance company with the rest of us. I've been in contact with darn near every insurance company you can think of. Every one I've tried says they WILL NOT insure an AMPHIBIOUS ATV. I figure COLLISION is out of the question ... BUT ... at least I'd like get my butt covered with some basic liability insurance

JT - The secret is to just tell them it's an ATV, pure and simple. They all seem to understand that easy enough. I didn't bring up the water aspect of it's abilities, as that would have brought up the deer in the headlights stare back. I initially tried,and it didn't work so I just told them it was an ATV, and they were happy. I've had luck with State Farm and Amica, no real issues with either.

I found Markel Insurance on the Internet. Full coverage is costing me $99 for the year. They have 6X6's listed on their quote forms. My auto agent wanted around $250.

I purchased insurance through Farmers Insurance Group. They had no trouble setting me up. I just had to show them the title and they asked to see the vehicle or have me take a picture of it for their records. (They even loaned me their office polaroid!) I live in Michigan, so what works for me might not work for you.

It truly sucks that no one definition exists for ATVs. Like others have said, most of these bureaucrats have no clue about amphibs and so we sort of slip through the cracks and fall into that "limbo" area where the law enforcement end of the government can pretty much do & say what they want and make it stick, while we suffer.

I got on a rant about this issue on this board some time back. The best thing to do is to go grassroots - get your local politician(s) involved. Give them some brochures and info on these vehicles. Give them a little background on how much longer amphibs have been around than current ATV designs. If they're somewhat skittish about getting involved, what with the whole ATV 'minority' vs. the pro-enviromental "greenies" majority issue, be sure to emphasize how much more enviromentally friendly our amphibs are than mainstream dirtbikes and quads. But, DON'T bash them! Remember... he might be a quad owner!

Explain the shortcommings of your existing legislation, and your frustration with state/local laws that are biased against AATVs. IF they can be made to understand your plight, and IF you have their interest, they might be willing to introduce amendments to current laws.

We elected these people, it's time to ask them do some of the jobs we hired them for!!!

DirtyHarry, You made a comment I've heard others say as well. You said to emphasize "how much more environmentally friendly our amphibs are then mainstream dirtbikes and quads." I've owned a quad runner for the past 18 years, and it's actually pretty environmentally friendly. I've owned my Max for a week now, so I'm very new with it still but..... I'm having trouble getting the Max to be friendly to the ground and ground cover, it seems to like shredding. I know with practice I'll get better at this, but it's really a shredder. My quad on the other hand leaves virtually no impact and slips through thinner areas and such. I'm not bashing either vehicle, I like them both, but I'm trying to see why you and others have said that the Amphibs are environmentally more friendly. I'm trying to understand the background on that one, not debate it. I'm all for environ friendly, but I can't get my Max to be as nice as my Quad yet to the environment. (For everybody's info, my quad is an old utility quad, no suspension, farming tool, it's somewhat slow and rugged, built for working. My riding habits aren't flying through the woods at 90, I'm slow and enjoying the scenery with as little mud flinging as possible)

jason enviromently unfreindly wouldent be an exact quote, i think it's the driving habits that make many quad and motorcycle trails so damaged, some fokes just go fast and spray mud, well with smother tires your max might be less damaging, lots of 6x6 owners are looking too put on agresiv treded tires for tracktion but i think with bald tires at low psi they would be adiquit for the job in most situations, you can get stuck with any kind of tires if you try hard anough

Jason, I don't think skidding over some grass does any real enviromental damage. I've done it to my yard and the grass grows back real fast. Ruts from fast spinning wheels is where the real damage is. I can get on a Scrambler 500 4x4 and do more damage in one hour than I could do in a lifetime of Maxing.
The Max hasn't done any damage to the yard. One time I washed my truck in the front yard. After over an hour of shinning it up I had to drive through the yard to the driveway. I put it in first and it just began to spin. You know MaxRules isn't going to get stuck in grass. I dropped it in 3rd and stomped it to the floor. I came out of the yard at about 5mph, wheels spinning at 50mph. The truck I worked so hard to get clean was now muddier than it had ever been. I cut some deep ruts that are still there today, several months later. The grass the Max tore up grew back within days.

By enviromentally friendly, I meant less PSI on the ground compared to quads. The average man (175lbs) puts somewhere in the neighboorhood of 8lbs PSI on the ground. The average Jeep (CJ/Wrangler) puts about 28lbs. A MAX II will put 1.5 - 2lbs PSI. Argos slightly more. A comparable 4x4 quad will put 3 - 4lbs PSI. Less PSI means less impact damage.

Driving style has a HUGE influence on the enviro-friendly aspect. I usually see guys throwing rooster tails and doing power slides on their quads. That ain't enviro-friendly. An AATV can be rough if you do hard braking in turns, but that's really about it. I don't know of any amphibs that can do rooster tails from a standing start or power slide in anything but the wettest slop (or on ice!)

Also, many modern quads are 2-stroke. Greenies hate 2-stroke machines. All modern AATVs are 4-stroke. I hold no grudge against quads, but the public perception of the "modern" ATV is usually one of younger guys doing dumb-assed speed stunts, jumps and harsh ripping turns, etc. This really bites when we amphibbers get lumped in under that same perception.

Hope I didn't offend you. Just wanted to clear that up.

DirtyHarry, No you didn't offend me, don't worry about that. I agree, many if not most of the Quad crowd are more into riding than the outdoors, and thus perform enviro destruction riding. I never did with my Quad, as it's a utility quad for farms, slow and powerful. I can slip it through the woods with MUCH less impact than my Max. I like it quite a lot, but whenever ANYONE sees it... they immediately think of some teenage motorhead doing stupid stuff and won't let it pass on their land. That's one of the reasons I bought the Max actually, lots of farm land around me but none of the farmers will let me run the Quad on their land. The Max (mine is a Buffalo) is more of a farm vehicle than the quad, so they're more willing to let it pass, especially after they see it and take a quick ride. Most of them have been receptive and friendly toward it... that was NOT the case with the Quad. (even though my quad leaves less of a wake behind it on the ground)

Does anyone have any pictures of the ARGO's before and up to the MAGNUM and the origional Vanguards? Any help is greatly appreciated. If you have any, please send them to my e-mail, and I will consider you GOD! I have been tring to find decent pictures of them, and haven't had much luck. Pictures of any type are welcome.

I know this is in the worng section, but I wasn't sure where it should go. Has anyone ever seen one of these things? The site is http://www.beachlauncher.com/ and I appologise as I don't know how to post a picture from a site on the board but go to the site and you'll see what I mean. I don't know if this things is propelled by the tires or by a prop but it has aatv tires and looks like the stripped down frame of a very long ARGO
