Anyone know how to figure the cubic inches of a gear pump or motor ? Do you measure the diamater of the gears and the width of them ? I have a unit I believe to be a motor that has an arrow for direction of rotation , I have been told some motors can be used as pumps , if true would the outlet ( larger port ) then become the inlet if used as a pump ? I am guessing that directional motors( ones with an arrow) are not reverseable , since they would leak oil in the opposite direction . Any help greatly appreciated

HEY AL: the gear hydraulic unit that you mention sound like a pump because:

* most motors shows on they ports "a" and "b"
* gear motor can be used as pump
* some pumps has "built-in check valves" make them works on only one direction.
* pumps shows "in" ( bigger port) and out (smaller port)...

* some are capable of reversing the flow on same rotation (cw or ccw) if they dissambled and rotate 180% degree the front cover ( drive sahft section).

* due to heat involved on pump/motor operation be prepare to replace seals every time that you open it..so if you cann't find seal on advance DON'T open a good working pump or motor!!

Isaac; Thanks for the info , you must be right because there is a larger port size 16 sae and a smaller port size 12 sae , along with a relief valve and what I think is a case drain port either size 4 or 6 sae. this (" pump") has approx 2" dia x 2 1/2 wide gears in it with a 7/8 shaft to drive it ,I sure would like to know how to figure the potential of this item . I just picked up another take off I think just needs seals that has both side ports and rear ports 1 1/4 NPT threads , no relief and the shaft is 7/8 " splined , I think that is a motor , I can read Gresen on it , I think it would be reversable too as there is not any drain port. I bought a book from Northern Hydraulics called Industrial Fluid Power volume 1 but it does not cover motors. I believe I need volume 3 to answer my questions of what cubic inch pump is needed for two motors and how much engine depending on weight of vehicle and terrain you plan to move on. Thanks again AL

HEY AL: with that "extra" hole explanation sound more like a tandem( 2 body) hydraulic pump....the 16 port is suction and 12 por one pump outlet and 6 port is seccond pump outlet.....12 port ( 3/4") can deliver upto 15 gpm at 1800 rpm and 6 port (3/8") can deliver upto 6 gpm at 1800 rpm.....one formula to convert h.p. to gmp depending on demand pressure (psi)..yeah the same psi that fred always mention on max performances!!!

VALUES

gpm ( us. gallon per minute) flow
psi ( pounds per square inch) pressure
h.p.( horse power or 760 watts)

h.p. = gpm x psi x 0.0007

usually the working pressure on gear type hydraulic system is 1800 psi

so 16 h.p. can handles an hydraulic pump capable to deliver upto 6 gallons per minute at 1800 psi at 1800 rpm ( 12 gmp at 3600 rpm)
