Okay... I am debating on going to Humphrey, it is 11 hours away and I would like to know if it is worth the hundreds of dollars for gas, the hundreds of dollars for the hotel, and the sore ass from sitting all that time? I need to get hotel reservations in soon. I would recommend you all do the same to. So I would appreciate if I could get some feedback.

Astefan ...!
Judging from your pre existing NEGATIVE attitude towards traveling to Humphrey ... SAVE YOUR MONEY AND STAY HOME ... you will not enjoy yourself.
Sure ... you'll miss what I consider PROBABLY THE #1 AATV EVENT ANYWHERE ... but hell ... you probably have similar events every week in your back yard ...!
I'm sure you will be much happier traveling to your favorite local riding area and "putt-puttin" around by yourself ... Then again ... I have no doubt you have already participated in day or night 20 - 30 mile trail rides ... in the company of a couple of hundred AATV's in small groups of 30 or 40 vehicles.

JT ... [made the last two ... will be at this one ... hell or high water]

OOPS .. Almost forgot ... water ... or rather ... water and mud.

Should you decide to come to Humphrey ... make sure you don't smile too much while traversing the TIMED mud course ...!

Looks like I'll be making it there. I'm not sure if I'll be bringing my Attex Colt or my newly aquired Wolf or Thunder Chief.

We went to Humphrey last year for the first time. Grinning for 48 hours straight will tire you out, but we'll be back this year. This event is priceless!!

SO DOSE ANYONE KNOW IF THERES ANY SNOW STILL ON THE TRAILS RIGHT NOW? IM GOING TOMORROW AND AM NOT SHURE WICH TIRES TO USE? MY RAWHIDE II'S OR III'S
IT WAS COLD LAST YEAR IN JULY, SO I THINK THIS APRIL RIDE IS GOING TO BE REALY COLD

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By JTBarleman on Unrecorded Date: Edit

George ...
Why quibble ... bring ALL THREE. Hell, I'm bringing my Attex 400 Chief, my Argo Vanguard, and a friends MaxII.

DAVIDRRRD ... Seriuosly doubt there will be snow. Suggest you bring the RAWHIDE II's and the III's. Trail ride on the II's ... and ... use the III's to try out the mud bog area ... just be sure that your winch is in working order. :-)

Lilchief,
Just read your posting. I hope your wife will decide to come also. When we are out in the ARGO my husband, Roger, does 99 percent of the driving and I just ride along. Once in awhile I do a tad of driving. We enjoy it because it is time for US, out away from the phones and home where everybody and your employer, knows how to get ahold of you. We take our cell phone in case of emergencies and away we go. Nobody even knows the cell phone number to call us. If your wife is concerned about a rough ride, I can't speak for Humphrey's because this is our first year also, but in general it is not that bad. I have some bad back, neck and shoulder injuries from an auto accident and it is still something I very much enjoy.

Hope to meet you at the Humphrey's run in July.
Bonnie and Roger(Southwestern Indiana)

Dear Dave:
I am so sorry I did not talk to you this past week, but I was overwhelmed with car problems and financial situations. Donna's car was over heating and I couldn't figure the problem out. I changed the thermostat, the antifreeze is full, and the waterpump and electric fan are fine. It must be a bad {clogged} radiator. It only gets hot on the highway. There is no way it can pull my Argo. I am having the radiator changed this Wednesday. I guess you are going to Humphrey. Good luck. Are you going solo? How is the Van? I changed my computer to verizon dsl, and have no mail or screen name. I don't even know how to email you!

L'il Chief-
Check further back up this message thread for a complete listing of the nearby hotels & motels, including phone numbers to call and make those reservations.

As for the event itself. Yes, each event has a seperate fee. The dice run & rodeo are pay 'n' play events. The rodeo has a mudbog/water obsticle race, a barrel race, a water relay race, broomball, blindman drives and one or two others as I recall. You should have no problem switching riders as the lines for each are fairly long, with plenty of time to change drivers (check with the helpers at the HVFD to make sure this is OK to do). The Friday Night "get lost" ride and the Sat. night rides are free (I believe).

There are some restaurants nearby and in the closest "big" town Salmanca (McD's, etc.) but I didin't eat at them except for breakfast one morning. I made a ton of coldcut sandwiches and had them packed into a cooler. My cousin and I ate from my goodie stash for most of the weekend to save on $$$. Take a big cooler and fill it with snacks and drinks. Use a smaller cooler to carry eats for the trail. This will make the riding more enjoyable, especially if it's hot.

Hope this info helps you a bit.

See you there!

Harry

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Tim Wafer (Iflyrctoo) on Unrecorded Date: Edit

Lilchief
I can't answer about motels as I brought my camper and stayed right there on the grounds. It's pretty much out in the boonies but as Harry pointed out Salamanca is the nearest real town.
My recollection of the fees is different though. I came by myself but know I only paid one registration fee and participated in several events including the dice run and night ride and a couple of the Sunday events.
I was thinking that you paid one fee per person and that included all events. Maybe I'm wrong but that's what I remember. Seems like there was a family rate too but maybe I'm all mixed up. Hopefully someone who is connected with the event will jump in and clear this up for you.
No lunch was provided on the trail but there was a chicken BBQ afterwards on Saturday that I think was included in the registration fee. On Sunday there was somebody there selling hamburgers I Know.
Hope to see you there.
Tim

Lilchief, I went to Humphery in 99.I went as a spectator because my old 6x6s were all apart. I figured I would just go watch and learn.I ended up in the back of a Max 4 in the obstacle corse and again on a night ride. Had a blast, lots of great people and good times. I was hoping to return in 2000 but had too much going on. This year I have been elected as president of my local Jeep club so I don't think I will make it for 2001 either. Wish I could be in 2 places at once . When you go take lots of pictures so you can look at them often like I do. It was about a 14 hour drive for me . Add about 1 1/2 hours for from your area. I hope to make it back again someday.

Is there a Shower at the primative camp.. or fire house?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Harry Dusseau (Dirtyharry) on Unrecorded Date: Edit

L'il Chief-

No shower (unless you pee into the wind!), so pick up one of those solar shower jobbies if you plan on being Mr. Clean at the campsite. You may want to consider lodging if cleanliness is high on your list of priorities. On the Sat. night ride, it was so dusty that when my cousin and I got back to our hotel room, we each had to shower for, like, 20 minutes to rinse all of the trail dust off & out of us! The shower water was dark brown as it swirled down the drain that night. It was dusty!!!

If you don't mind a little grunge, you should be OK roughing it for the weekend. Your family may feel differently, though.

Harry

Hi everyone, I was just on Yahoo.com in there map section geting directions. yahoo has good maps and clear directions. You can also look up hotels and camping. To get to the camp ground list type camping in the search box after geting your direction and it will list all of them in the area and tell you how many miles away they are from the center of humphury. There are about 20 hotels and 20 camp grounds listed within 25 miles. Thought this info. would help some people out there. Matt

I have a question for those of you who have attended the Humphreys ride before. Will we at anytime be out on lakes or ponds so that we would, by law, need to have flotation vests in the vehicle with us. I'm assuming, the roll bars we have on our Argo won't be a problem on the trails..if so we'll just take them off while we are there. We are really looking forward to getting away for the run. Take it from a couple who ride with only our one unit a lot of the time, it is much more fun riding and making new friends from a group run. I'm looking forward to meeting a lot of the people whos opinions I read on this site and to some whom I've gotten acquainted with on Email. We're even going to take in Niagara, NY while we are there. See you in Humphreys.

I have another question. Will the Fire Department be grilling and selling burgers and such on the three days of the Humphreys ride, or should we all be self sustaining with sandwiches and snacks. Trying to figure what we need to pack. It is easy to get carried away and pack alot of things that aren't necessary.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By david berger (Davidrrrd) on Unrecorded Date: Edit

pack away, you wont have to stand in line or worrie about how many other people are depending on the firedept for there meals, yes thay will fire up the grils and can muster a huge efort, but you should bring some stuff just in case,= eat when your ready, don't forget a soft side colapsable cooler (to keep soada cans from bouncing around) with yah with snacks on the trail, average time depending on hold ups ahead of you can be 3 or 4 hrs on the mountin! lots of snack time in there,

Here's the official numbers from the Humphrey ride.

Over 200 people were registered for the dice run on saturday.

There were 137 machines at the event.
2- Terra Tigers
1- Coot
4- Attex
2- Hustler
74- MAX
54- Argo

These numbers are from the Fire Department so sorry if they forgot anyone.

Overall a great turnout and great time.

A 16hp MAX II with the same driver won 1st and 2nd place in the mud bogg race. By the way this was the same guy who won last year.

We just got back from the humphrey ride. That was a blast, we had the best time. All the machines were awesome. I would like to thank rodger and bonnie (hope i got that right) for letting me test drive there argo. Nice machine. Also thanks doug for the driving tips. I tried them on the night ride and you were right it was a big difference going down the hills. I have to admit i was a bit surprised by the quad machine in the back mud trails. I think it was going better than all the other machines unless i am mistaken. anyway that was awesome and looking forward to next year. Are there anymore rides coming up that are about the same distance from nh or closer?

and one of the Orr's crews supposive sister won the argo bigfoot. enough said on that (holding my tongue)

I had a blast at this years ride. The ppl were great. The rides were awsome. Fridays night ride was a riot. We got lost up in them there woods and turned a 2hr ride into a 4hr ride. What a blast. Will look forward to next years run. later...

We returned from our trip to Humphrey - had a blast on our first trip of this sort. Well worth the 8 hour drive from Connecticut. A special thanks to those who helped fix the tire in the mud pitt on the dice run. The coot may be slow but it made it through some spots that argos and maxes got stuck. Not bad for a 30 year old machine. Look forward to next year. Watch out Max and Argo the New generation Coot is upon us!!

Had to write in about the Humphrey ride, it was our first year. What a fantastic weekend! I had the Attex that stalled in the water on the mud pit course. Every time I tried to start it back up, it shocked me something terrible. I know everyone that was watching got a good laugh out of that one. Thanks to the other Attex owners for all the helpful hints. PS- the "free-for-all" at the end of the race was classic. I can't even tell what color my machine or clothes are suppossed to be! See you all next year

Just for the record. I saw the coot stuck some places that the maxs and the argos went with ease. Everyone I rode with made it through the whole course without any problems. We had 7 maxs and 2 argos with us. Hope this clears up any misconceptions.

the only place i had to get pulled out was in the swamp behind the obsticle course. After i got winched out,a new argo conquest got burried in the same spot and then it was my turn to pull him out.can you tell me where else i got stuck? follow me next year (if you can) The coot is really slow,is that what you mean by stuck??
Next year i hope to have the new coot (atav) which features 18hp vanguard, automotive three speed syncro trans, selective two or four wheel drive and a top speed of fourty miles an hour.it also comes stock with 31" tractor tires.

The simple trees on the mud pit race stopped you dead. You were high-sided!!! Any of the other vehicles drove over the trees with ease.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Tom on Unrecorded Date: Edit

The Coot was a neat machine though. Who cares if he got stuck a few times. ALOT of people got stuck in the mud bog behind the race track. It seems like everyone is always ripping on one another on this page of the site.

We just returned from NY. We drove up to Niagra Falls when we left on Monday morning. We had a great time in Humphreys. We met lots of new friends. A special "Thank You" for our new friends Tom and Treva whom we met for the first time in a rest stop on the way to Humphreys. The night rides were really fun. It is really impressive to look down the l o n g winding hill you just came up and see all those headlights climbing behind you. We hope to return next year or the year after. Rogers work schedule will give us the answer later. For those of you who did not stick around after the events were completed, the races through the mud pits and attempts at totally coating everyone in mud were very entertaining. I would like to thank the Fire Department for putting on such an event. This took a great deal of work for you and your membership and volunteers. For those of you who plan to go next year, the FireChief said that it will be held on the first weekend in August to avoid conflicting with other events taking place. Hope we get to see many of you soon, either at the Turkey Bay run or in the Badlands at Attica, IN next month.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Big Bill on Unrecorded Date: Edit

Hank, I saw 2 different machines have to take a second run to get over the trees in the obstacle course. We all stood there and watched it. I also saw two different Argo Big Foots get stuck in the swamp behind the mud pits in the very same place. The Coot got stuck there too! The difference was that the Coot put it in reverse and crawled right out. The Big Foots needed help from other drivers.
THESE ARE FACTS AND NOT OPINIONS.
I hardly saw that old Coot struggling to make it through the muck. As for a direct comparison, what's it matter? The Coot is VERY SLOW and it can't turn on a dime like the skid steers, but it is hardly a weak or pathetic machine. I'm sure that you can respect a 30 year old machine that probably cost 1/8 of your vehicle, right? Anyone who rode near it or watched it = respected it. Especially those who got any help from it. Just like the Attex that stalled, who cares? I was just glad to see him compete and have fun too. Not bad for a bunch of dinosaur AATVs. I hope we have more of them come to Humphrey in the future. They give these events flavor. Do you know how boring it would be if there were 137 Max IIs at Humphrey and nothing else?
This event is about AATVs and friendship. Remember that kids and teenagers from our events read these posts too. Not just adults! What kind of message do we want to send to them?
Choose a side and fight like hell !!!

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By James Nordstrom on Unrecorded Date: Edit

Jim,

Yeah maybe you are right, but there is one important point left out. There was one spot on the entire Humphrey course that only one machine made it through. The mud hole on the dice and you will never guess who made it through that...it was the EDG Centaur. Oh yeah and since you want to pull off the gloves ol Jimmy boy...not one Argo broke down...There were quite a few Max's "Under tow." So you are correct you may have made a mistake.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By James Nordstrom on Unrecorded Date: Edit

Oh yeah Jim since you can't read I will interpret the above results of the events. All the events were one by Argo's except the mud bog.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By newmax on Unrecorded Date: Edit

I think you are mistaken. first of all andy from nh made it through that mud hole in his max II. And ouside the 440 class the max II won the barrel race. for the most part most of the machines went through the same places

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By James Nordstrom on Unrecorded Date: Edit

New Max,

I agree with you most machines are very equal in every aspect. I was just commenting on Mr. negative up there (Jim). He probably wasn't there and is calling the ball from his home computer. There was a mud hole on the dice run though that no one made it through except the Centaur.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By mazurowsk on Unrecorded Date: Edit

The mud hole is called the wholly shit mud hole. Each year it gets worse. If you aren't one of the first to go through it gets very slick on the sides and you cant get traction so you slip in to the ruts and high center. The centar did make it through no problem but there were a couple of maxII that got through and the blue Argo also another argo got through these of course took a couple of tries. The mud hole was the only real mud hole on the trail this year since we lost some of the land we usually ride on. I would like to just remind people who come th these events that there are not that many rukes but the ones that we have are usually for your own safety and not following the rules is why we lose our riding privilages on some of the lands. Please help us keep the land we have left. There was one person in particular this year that really jeopardised our having the event in the future as it stands now everything is o.k. but they vote each year whether to have this event and one bad apple could spoil it all for us. Again please help out by observing the rules if you are reading this you know who you are.

The mud hole was about 1/3 of the way into the Satuday dice ride. "Ramona's Mud Hole" eats a lot of victims every year. It is very unfirgiving, and is more about exactly where you drive and your speed, than your vehicle.

While Mr. Nordstrom seems to want to re-write history, the FACTS are that 1 Max II (Go Andy!) and 1 Max IV (purple padded rollcage) made it across the mudhole on the first try. Both Argo Centaurs slowly and steadily chugged their way across in one try as well. That's it. No one else could do it. (At least not while the first wave of amphibbers tried it. Others may have later on.)

The mud hole this year was very low & dry compared to last (so I'm told) and everyone had trouble fighting across it. It seems to get tougher every year. It took me two tries when I first went to Humphrey 2 years ago. As I recall, there was a lot more water in the hole (plus Ramona fell on her behind, which everyone had a good chuckle at), while this year, the hole was like a big bowl of thick oatmeal.

No matter what, Humphrey was a ton of fun. Everyone should go there at least once. It is a great way to meet people. **I just wish all of us who post here had worn nametags or something. I know I must have ridden with some others who come to this board, but I never got their names.** Next time, I think I'll put my username on one of Richard's Route 6x6 shirts so folks will at least know me and come up and say "HI."

Still haven't gotten around to getting all of my pictures developed yet. Took some good shots of Ramona's Mud Hole and the Rodeo. One roll back so far, hope the other one turns out (have to finish up the rest of the roll).

RIDE ON!!!

Harry, I agree about nametags or something of the sort. I had the silver terra tiger at Humphrey. It is too bad we didn't meet.

I agree about the mud holes. it is more who is driving than the machine. I seem to get stuck more often than most because of my driving. By the way i had the max IV with the homemade top. made out of lexan.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Mike on Unrecorded Date: Edit

Tom you are right. I was there with a four wheeler
and a dual sport. Every machine has it's limits along with the drivers. I would get stuck driving a 6 wheeler in places I'd never get stuck with the 4 wheeler. Then there are the times when You just have a BAD day. AS long as we are all out there haveing fun and helping each other who cares who got stuck where. Keep the wheels down.

Later

Mark-
I saw your silver 'Tiger zooming around the grounds. It was a very nice-looking machine. Your's and that other Terra Tiger were really quick! I own a Max and don't care much for some aspects of the Argo's design, but... there was an old Argo at Humphrey with a 2-stroke that was faster than hell! WOW! All hail the classic Argo! That machine and the Attex & Terra Tiger buggies did the "old guard" proud by whooping the snot out of us newbies (speed-wise).

ATTN: Joel Hasser (500 SuperChief)
I read elsewhere on this board that you were at Humphrey this year. I sure wished I had known you and your Attex SC500 were there. My cousin & I left fairly early Sunday to get a headstart on our long haul back home. I would've at least hung around long enough to take you up on that test ride offer you made me for LAST year's Humphrey Ride! Dang!!

*** Next year, ALL of us Route 6x6ers need to post here in advance if we plan on attending (a sort of roll call). Plus, we need to identify ourselves with nametags, Route 6x6 shirts, etc. at Humphrey so that we can finally meet one another face-to-face, swap B.S. stories, and ride together!!!

Looking forward to next year already!

I was thinking the same thing about putting faces with names on this board. I am usually with the ribits riders group. I usually ride as a passenger but this year I had my own MaxII and rode all by myself my husband was going to drive his maxIV but his back started bothering him too much so he sat at camp while I had all the fun see you all nest year.

Just for the record. I towed an argo out with a blown tranny.

Once again there were a lot of 70's and 80's MAXS there, but where were all the old argos? The only old one was afraid of the mud.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By david berger (Davidrrrd) on Unrecorded Date: Edit

how about that , it's the first time i think i have ever herd of a blown trany in an argo!

Barry, where did you go on Saturday night. Matt had the Max ready for you but no one could find you.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By 97 Bigfoot on Unrecorded Date: Edit

It's actually quite common. My dealer says it happens on about 25% of the machines he sells after 2 to 3 years. My 97 Bigfoot tranny went out while plowing snow last year. It started making a grinding noise and then seized up. $ 950.00 and 3 1/2 weeks later I was running again. It seems that when they go they really go. I keep hoping it dosn't happen again. I now change my tranny fluid twice a year. I recomend that everyone with an Argo keep fresh fluid in their tranny.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By MaxRules (Brandon_price) on Unrecorded Date: Edit

Even a Max guy like myself can't believe that. ODG makes transmissions and even though they can't manage a true six wheel drive machine, they can sure build a reliable vehicle. Most all tranny failures in any off road vehicle is caused by lack of fluid or water contamination. It should be changed regularly according to use so all the dirt and metal shavings can be cleaned out. Also check it often to make sure it isn't leaking.

Sounds like everyone had a good time at Humphrey. Want to come back sooner than next August 2002? We're having a ride the weekend of 9/22/01 and all 6 and 8 wheel amphibious machines are welcome to attend. Details are posted under the Events section. I'll provide the name tags!

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By matt435 on Unrecorded Date: Edit

A comment on the argo trannys. The most common cause for them to fail is lack of fluid maint. or jamming them into gear with the machine still moving or the engine running to fast. I have had over twennty, six wheelers and 4 have been argos, a 1968,1976,1985,and a 2001 bigfoot. I have never had a tranny fail. Remember: the best way to go into high gear is to go into reverse then a quick sweep to high. I have seen people get stuck in the mudd and try to shift fast and rock it out. This is what tears them up sooner or latter. Matt

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By 97 Bigfoot on Unrecorded Date: Edit

I don't know... I sure Believe my checkbook. I also have the old parts to prove to any nay-sayers. And my dealer was the one who told me about the failures he had. I guess that if he has a 25% failure rate and only sells 4 or 5 machines a year (which he also told me) it only amount to 1 per year. Mine was 2 years old when it broke. I followed the manufactures maintainence schedule to the letter and it still broke. Now I do it twice as often and I have not had any trouble since.

big foot,
was there oil in the tranny after it blew?
odg does build a tuff crash box.
they built them for amphicat/canada.
i have seen those gear boxes outlive the rest of the entire vehicle.

We can't make the Sept ride. No more vacation days and too long a ride from the southwestern tip of Indiana. How about incorporating the ride to the bear caves and the long run with lunch on the trail into next Augusts run. That would put a little variation from this year and maybe draw even more back. Have a good ride. We'll have to be happy with seeing you next August.

well for thoughs who missed the september name tag event you realy mised out on some real good riding let me tell yah! we hit the trails rain or shine and nobody got lost!
well i almost did but my atv is loud enoph i would be easy to find anyhow,
the nametags were nice but i noticed people used there first names only and not rt6x6 discussion board handles or e-mail addresses wich if you think about it is the only way many of us know each other, is was partly the point of the tags,
we were a small groop so we were able to travel quickly threw all the trails,
it was a small groop due i think to the great number of alternitive riding events located closer too some who otherwise would have come, and well theres nothing wrong with that huh,
i'd like too see somthing like theses rides out in my erea somday too,
for thouse whoud like a copy of the 4 hr long september rides video just drop me a line!
for the addres or other info, ect...
