Amphi-cat axel's snap ?

Route 6x6 Discussion Board: Restoration of older ATV's: Amphi-cat axel's snap ?
Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By argonaut II on Unrecorded Date: Edit

I've broken 2 axles, anouther has snapped today while on the test run.
The axel becomes discolored right where the shaft enters the bearings on the machine & this is where the axel snaps.
Am I missing a part ? or is this just the Family bad luck ?
could it be from normal wear after all these years ?
The golf cart tires I'm useing shouldn't have an effect should it ?

Any advice on the subject would be great, would be nice to drive this at least one day without a breakdown.

WHAT MODLE CAT??? ON SOME THE AXLE ENTERS DRIVE TUBE WICH IS IN THE BEARINGS, AND STAYS IN THE BEARINGS WHEN AXLE IS REMOVED TOO!
ON THOUGHS YOUD NEED TO CHECK CLOASLY CAUS THERES PROBLE WORN OUT BEARINGS THERE, ALSO OUTER SEAL MAY BE A PROBLEM,
AND ANOTHER MODLE CAT HAS A CONE SHAPED BEARING, THESE MUST BE PROPERLY ADGUSTED AND COULD GET HOT ENOPH TO RUIN TEMPER IN AXLE IF TOO TIGH, ALSO BEARING MIGHT BE CRAP BY NOW TOO!
ROADWOLF MIGHT HAVE A PIC OF THE AXLE SETUP THAT HAS THE CONE SHAPED BEARINGS,

TY for the replys

I believe I have the Bearings that are sealed inside of the tube.

I am guessing these are sealed bearings & cant be greased.

Since Im running this Amphicat without a body there is no outter seal to speak of,I'm assuming this seal is for water on the axel....

ARGONAUT, THEY MAY BE NO OTHER WAY EXEPT THAT OF DISASEMBLY OF AN AXLE SETUP, THIS WAY AT LEAST YOU WILL KNOW WHAT TYPE BEARINGS YOU HAVE AND WTETHER YOU NEED TO TAKE STEPS TO PROTECT THEM FROM ENVIROMENT SOMEHOW,
ASK ROADWOLF (PHILIP OSBORN ) FOR A PIC HE MAY STILL HAVE OF ONE CONE SHAPED BEARING SETUP I THINK YOU MIGHT HAVE, OR YOU COULD TAKE PICS OF YOURS FOR US,
ARE YOU MAKEING YOUR OWN REPLACEMENT AXLES? THEY NEED TO BE HARDEND I BELEAVE,
