Can you convert any jlo engine to an electric start? I have a 340 twin I want to put in my colt it doesn't have electric start now but I would like to convert it. Also if any knows the parts I would need that would be helpful. Am also looking for headlights, Richard said they were standard auto if so what number should I get?

badtnt, some motors have a block off plate where a starter motor can be installed. remove the plate and see if the flywheel has a ring gear install.

My Attex manual states "DO NOT USE AUTOMOTIVE SEALED BEAM". Only use 18 Watt or equal. I would try a tractor replacement type if you do not have an original to compare it against.

Your JLO twin will need the ring gear that mounts between the clutch and the engine. There was one on Ebay not too long ago. The starter also turns the opposite direction than most of them because the ring gear is on the PTO side of the engine.

Thanks for info. I am going to look at the engine today to see if there is a ring gear.Another couple questions, the 340 should use the same mounting plate as the 252 right? Why can't I use more than 18 watt light? Is it because of the draw? If so wouldn't it just make the light dimmer?

I USED THE AUTO TYPE LIGHTS, IT WORKED OK, BUT THEN I DID NOT USE THE STARTER SWITCH FOR POWER TO THEM, I USED MY OWN WIREING, BUT THE BATTERY HELD UP OK,

badtnt, most older sled engines put out 75 to 100watts.
by the time you add accessories- grip warmers, tail lights, etc, well you have to watch you don't over draw your altenator.
some older sachs came with only 40 watt systems.
i think brandon said his max came w/18watt lamps stock.
you could easily go up to the 35watt tractor lamps and should still be safe.

Besides adding the starter and ring gear, the electrical system will have to be converted to DC with a bridge rectifier. Most snowmobile type motors without electric start use AC power to run the lights, and that won't work to charge the battery you'll need to run your starter. I am collecting the parts to put electric start on my '73 Massey Ferguson Ski Whiz 440 (JLO).
If you can find a Massey sled at a wreckers that has electric start, they were set up so the wiring for the starter and rectifier plugged in to the existing harness. If the motor that was in your Colt had electric start you may be able to adapt the harness from it to the new motor.
