Howdy Friends,

OK, I have a 297 JLO. Just dropped it my Colt a few weeks ago. It started up fine but needed some work on the carb (Hi-revs it leaked fuel). I got that fixed.
Now I'm having problems with the spark. It ocassionally sparks but not enough to start the engine. I checked the coil (cleaned the contacts)and I'm wondering what could be bad. For example, if the coil is bad, would it spark at all, magnito, spark plug wire, points etc; same question?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
George

hey george:

if spark is yellow maybe you have problem with coil...easy way is to temporaly replace the coil with a 6 volt one.....if you get blue spark the coil is ok......put some wd-40 on points and check gap at 0.16 with non magnetic gauge........happy bouncing!!!...and don't forget to try also a new spark plug

the best thing to do is put in new points, condenser, and a spark plug.make sure your air gap for the magneto is set right and also the point gap is correctly set.if your ignition is working ok you should have a blue spark when turning over the engine with the spark plug out and grounded.also if your ignition is working you should be able to hear the snapping sound of the spark plug when it fires. a yellow spark is a sure sign of something not quite right in the ignition system.also i have found that if the magneto coil is rusty where the magnets pass by on the flywheel it will cause a weak firing condition. lightly sand the magneto where the magnets pass by.i have not seen a jlo engine but this is the basics for all magneto ignition engines.

Any one have any tips on how to remove old condensors and install new ones on my JLO 400cc twin? Any tips on the points would help too.

George

Removing the points and condensors is as easy as removing the flywheel and some screws. Putting everything back together is another story. One thing that will help is an extra cam that the points ride on. This will get point gap right without working through the holes in the flywheel. You can take the cam loose from the flywheel and use it . If your not sure what I'm talking about, you will understand once you dig in! You can adjust the timing of one cylinder by moving the plate the points are mounted to . The other cylinder is timed by adjusting the point gap. I can give you lots more info , but these are the highlights. To know you have it right, put a timing light on it. You should also check this before you begin so you have a bench mark.

I had a problem with my JLO starting. It ended up the point gap was too large (timing advanced) and when it would finally fire, the engine would kick back and disengage the starter. Boy what a pain. make sure you get the right points for that engine. I didn't the first time and had to put it back together with the old ones.

One more question. Which side is the number one cylinder on? Is it closest to the flywheel or the clutch?

Thanks,

George

I have a Camel ATV. It has a John Deere Gator motor in it and I am trying to fix a few things on it that weren't properly done. If anyone has any info. on that model I would appreciate it. It floats and runs.

a camel huh,
trever please take lots of pics and post them on 6x6 because thats a rear bird and we'd all like to see pics,
even though it's bin alterd some, there are no other pic's available and yours may become the only ones left for future generations to go by in restorations or just in identifying them,
thanks trever (in advance)

I have a JLO336 that is spitting gas out the carborator and seems to be very short on the upper rpm range. I mounted the muffler for convenience with a 2 ft 2" pipe from motor. Do I need to shorten the exhaust to make it more in "tune". Or wouldn't that make such a difference. Thanks for any input.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By tropicjungleboy on Unrecorded Date: Edit

HEY BEN: hi rpm restriction could be something related to fuel ( carburator adjustment ) or spark problem.............easy way to discart posibility is to replace spark plugs.........also check WITH NEW SPARK for blue spark jump............then try to close a little the hi needle on carburator...........and maybe..if those changes/test doesnot get your engine on shape you should adjust the float level ( ok....the vacuum membrane adjustment!!)
keep posted so we can follow up........

I'm having a great deal of difficulty tracking down any JLO engine parts at all. I am in the UK and have a big old grass mower (sorry it's not an ATV!) with a JLO 247cc single cylinder 2 stroke type L252L. I need a Magneto - any ideas?? Thanks in advance.
