I have what i think to be a 1976 argo 6x6. I know for certain it is argo, just not sure of the year. The serial number tag says #2376. It has a 399cc Kohler engine and the only number i can find on the trans is stamped on the top of it, and it says 2007x. My question is this; what number dayco drive belt should i be using? The one that is on it is a dayco max # 1035. I think that it has way too much slack. I can almost push down on the top of the belt and touch the bottom of it. Any help would be appreciated.

I think what happens is the belt gets streched out from so much horsepower going through it. The belt on my Hustler is only 13/16" wide and the top of it can be touched to the bottom when you pull it together between the clutches. The driven clutch (on tranny) is not even holding the belt at idle. It is so loose it just sits on top at about 1" below the top of the clutch. A good belt should sit flush with the top of the driven clutch and have no more than 1-3/4" movement up and down. The belt that is currently on it is probably the right one, just worn out.

Rusty,

I think such rules of thumb others are telling you about belt length may not lead you to the correct belt sizing.

Your best bet is to call the manufacturers, Ontario Drive and Gear, at 519-662-2840 and ask.

Cheers,

Gord
