Hi bill,
I own two Terra-Jet in Québec,Canada. The hole in the rear part of the vehicule is to prevent rain water to stay in the vehicule. You should have a stopper ("bouchon" in french) a kind of screw that fits in the hole. As for the engine, look for a Ski-doo (snow mobile) engine. I know Bombardier does great engines the ROTAX.

Nicolas---I purchased the Terra-Jet that you e-mailed the shift pattern and check-out proceedures for.

I picked it up 2 days ago. When I went to load it, the "horse trader" that I purchased it from was concerned about the Terra-Jets ability to pull up the incline of the loading ramps with the truck and trailer setting on level ground. Then he admitted that the belt slips when it is run enough to heat it up. So, I loaded it with the ramps nearly level to the floor of the trailer.

It has not slipped for me but I have not run it but just around the parking lot on relatively level ground.

I pulled the belt and it really doesn't look like it has much wear. In fact, it looks nearly new. However, they had the belt tensioner (the long threaded rod) adjusted out to the max with the brake bracket nearly touching the rear wall of the engin compartment. That makes me wonder if it has the wrong belt.

Is there anything else that can slip on the drive train? I would think it would all be related to the belt and the two variable pulleys.

Do you have the part number for the correct belt? The one that I just removed is made for NAPA by Snow Power of Canada. The number is 5128.

My Terra-Jet is the model that has a sports car type profile, with a Kohler 2 cylinder, 2-cycle engine. Do you know of a source for a manual for this beast?

Any help you can provide will be most welcom.

Jim, I really don't know anything about Terra jets, but try some belt dressing on your belt if you think it is slipping (I use the liquid stuff regularly and put it on both edges with my finger - get it from NAPA or similar auto parts supplier). If you use the spray kind, take your belt off first so you don't get belt dressing all over inside your machine. Belt dressing prolongs the life of your belt and ensures top performance always.

Generally, you should be able to get a drive belt on and off without undoing anything. It should be a snug fit, but doable. If it just slips off, it is too long.

A friend of mine got a parts manual from Terra Jet USA I think they are called. Try http://members.tripod.com/~TERRAJET/id5.html
If you have the model number for your machine they should be able to fix you up. I don't know about a service manual though.
As for the belt check out

the info there may help you decide if your belt is the right size. I'd check out the condition of the clutch and secondary pulley myself,I have seen old snowmobile systems not work right due to a dirty, sticky clutch, or worn weights.
