I AM HELPING A FRIEND RESTORE A CHAPARRAL. IT IS MISSING THE TRANSMISSION MOUNT AND SOME OF THE LINKAGE TO THE TRANS. DOES ANY BODY HAVE PICTURES OF THE TRANS INSTALLED WITH ALL THE STEERING LINKAGE INSTALLED?

I have had my Chapparel 2J for a couple of years, it's still in the project stage.
It's supposed to run, and is very complete except that the body is full of bondo and cracks.
It looks like Nevada rocks and 6x6 do not mix well!

I hope to fix this one up, I would like to find a good body, but may make my own out of easy to repair fiberglass. WHY did'nt these guys use 'glass in the first place?

The silly little stock tires appear to be almost impossible to find, the good news is that some of them appear to be OK.

A manual, or at least a wire schematic, would be very helpful.

I would like to determine what sort of plastic Chapparel used, I have had good luck with the 3M repair system on some other projects.

Anyone with parts or info please e-mail me.

Just dug an old Chaparral out of the local bone yard. Body sticker says it's an MK-1. She was loaded to the gills with beer cans, only 2 tires were holding air, 339cc JLO was sitting on the ground next to her , locked up!!! It had the original motor mount and clutch on it so we brought it along for good measure. One set of wheels would turn ,the other wouldn't. The 20 dollar bill he was askin for seemed a little steep!! But I just couldn't leave her there!!! I quickly started searching for info via the net, and a local rehab expert ,and started testing and checking parts. WD 40 got all the chains loose.
The T-20 trans seemed to work as we pulled her behind my pickup truck . Brakes locked, drive pully would turn when the levers were engaged foward. The frame had little rust and was still 90% grey paint with small rusted areas. Looking good so far!!!! Bought an old Polaris 398cc from a guy at work for $45 that had run 2 years ago when he plucked it from an old sled. Needless to say 2 weeks after I saved her she was diggin grass . What a Riot !!!!! Now the restoration begins.

Neat story Dano,We have collected a few old 6x6s over the past couple of years. One Attex we found in the winter. It was half full of ice and had 4 flat tires. It was quite a job to haul that one home! My kids are working on a few of them and have them on the way together now. I never have seen a Chaparral around this part of the country. Can you post any pictures? Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

Guys,
Just came from the garage and am kinda scratchin' my head a little on this body repair deal. I'm missing a pretty large chunk of the engine cover, and another piece that would run right along the engine cover, nice rounded molded ABS will be hard to duplicate!! What chance am I going to have in finding some donor parts??? It's lookin like the Chaparral is about the least common of these machines to find. Should I just do my own thing behind the rear seat, or struggle to keep her as original as possible??? Will these machines become collectables?? Penny for your thoughts guys!!! Dano

Chararrel 2J progress.

Looks like all tires may be salvagable, got the recoil starter fixed, electric appears to be dead.

No spark, really need to know how to time this beast, adjust points, and WHICH wire gets the 12V power for ignition?
JLO Rockwell engine.

Body is pretty broken up and plastic is very brittle, lots of UV radiation at 6,000' in Nevada!

I am considering making a new body in fiberglass, or maybe diamond plate aluminum?

I DO want it to float when I get it done, NV Game Department says I can use it to hunt ducks if I register it as a boat first.

Richard,
I live in Dayton and have a MAX II with the JLO 295 engine. I didn't see what size engine you have, but I'll bet they all used the same setup. I'll draw up a schematic for you this weekend if I get a chance. It's nice to see someone else from NV has one of these things.....when we get 'em running we can have our own little jamboree!
Bill

Eric,

I'd contact Richard Clark. If he does not have the parts look on snowmobile sites because the engines we use are also used by snowmobiles.

what parts are you looking for

Hi Guys,
I just picked up a Chaparral last week to use with my boys (8 & 5yo). I don't know the model or year but the ser# is 00748 and it looks exactly like the one in the museum section, white w/ red stripes. It's a surprise xmas present for "US". I used to have an Attex when I was a kid and always had a blast going out with my dad so I think they'll really enjoy it too. Now, my question is it has a Borg-Warner t20 which happens to be devoid of any lubricant and so I was wondering exactly what goes in there- 90wt or ?.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By pete6x6 on Unrecorded Date: Edit

Chris,

The t-20 uses a quart of dextron tranny fluid. Don't use anything else.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Fred Sowerwine, Montana's Max Dealer (Fred4dot) on Unrecorded Date: Edit

And chris, only fill it to the check level plug (lower left side). Have tranny level and let "all that will run out", run out. It takes a while for the fluid from the fill plug on the upper right to get through all the baffles and gears to the lower left side. A suction device, with a real small hose (1/4"), is the best way to get old oil out of the T-20.

If the t-20 is really empty, check for leaks at the o rings on the plungers, at the output shafts or the seam between the two halves.

Just bought a chaparral 6X6. SN # 00178. Where do I go to find info out on this baby? Are tires available? Can I adapt atv tires and rims to these hubs?. The guy said it ran two years ago but the ignition switch is busted and I got no spark. What wire should I be hotwiring to get this thing to run so my wife gets off my back? It was garage kept and used at a summer home so I don't think it has alot of hours. How much is it worth? Thanks Randy

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By david berger (Davidrrrd) on Unrecorded Date: Edit

AAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!
!DONT' HOT WIRE ANYTHING!!!!!
IT'S RUN FROM A MAGNITO AND THE ENGINE WILL RUN WITOUT ANY CONECTIONS TO THE REST OF YOUR ATV!
YOU CAN RECHARGE YOUR BATERY FOR THE ELECTRICK STARTER MOTOR WITH THE CHARGING CIRCUT FROM MOTOR, OR RUN LIGTS BUT MOTOR NEEDS ONLT A GROUNG WIRE FROM LAWN TRACTOR KEY SWITCH TO THE COIL TO STOP IT FROM RUNNING,
OUTSIDE OF THAT THERE IS NO NESESARY WIREING,
UNPLUG THE WIRES FROM MOTER THAT DON'T DIRECTLY GO TO COIL AND SEE IF IT WILL SPARK FOR YOU, YOU MAY NEED A NEW PLUG, AND PULL IT OVER WITH THE PULL STARTER WITH THE PLUG OUT TO CHECK SPARK,
SOME TIMES YOU CAN EVEN GET DIRTY POINTS TO CLEAN UP NUFF THIS WAY TOO!
BUT NEVER NEVER ADD 12V POSITIVE TO ANY THING LIKE YOUR COIL DUDE THIS AINT LIKE A CAR IGNITION!
