Hi, I am running an Argo Magnum 8x8 with the 18hp engine. I put 5W30 full synthetic oil during the last oil change. The manual calls for SAE30. While running it today (Approx 75 F) it was operating at about 200 F. Is this normal? What is the extreme? Should I be using the SAE 30? Thanks.

I have taken mine to an extreme level once before and it was fine. I don't think that you really have anything to worry about but don't let the oil temp get to the top of the gauge. If you get it that high, just stop and let it sit for a few minutes. It will drop after a little while. I have the same machine and i haven't had any problems.

I'm running 5w30 synthetic in winter, and 10w30 synthetic right now. I'm pulling an agri-fab trail mower (about 500lbs.) every night. I havent had any problems and the choice of oil we have made is recommended in the Briggs owners manual.I think the question is... Is SAE30 better than a multi-grade synthetic? Maybe but I doubt it. If anyone can say otherwise for sure,I would like to hear about it. Slammy aka "The General"

Hi
I also have an Argo Magnum with overheating problems. It periodically would get up as high as 230F if I didn't stop & let it cool down. I went to 5w50 synthetic, added a remote oil filter& made
a screen cover to replace the hood, which seemed to help. In my case I think some of the overheating turned out to be a low float level causing a lean mixture.
