I am thinking about buying a used Max IV. It is a '97 with approximately 65 hours. The owner says it leaks a bit when in water. He said when he bought it new in '99 [yes, it must have sat in showroom for 2 years] that the dealer told him it would start leaking around the seals in about a year and that they all do eventually.

Is this true about the leaking?

He is asking $3,400 for it [16 hp] and I think that may be high. What do you guys think?

Thanks,
Kay

Yes, Kay, they will all leak over time, but it is a maintenance problem. There are four bolts that hold the axle bearing flanges together and there is a rubber like seal between the flanges and the body. These bolts need to be uniformly tight and the cavity around the bearing needs to be full of grease to keep the leaking to a minimum. A little water will pass through the bearing, but if the bearing is OK, it is minimal (hard to tell if it leaked in or was splashed in. A Max with 65 hours is just barely broken in. The 16 hp max is the smallest of that model and if not upgraded with solid axles and o-ring chains could require extra maintenance (depending on how it is to be used). Go to my web site and check out the price for a new machine - regardless, this machine is a very good buy.
