My Bigfoot has about 5 hrs on it, so I removed the firewall and the two floor plates to check my chains. I noticed that the left side idler chain is very tight, little or no slack. The right side idler chain has about 3/4" slack. I checked that the machine was in neutral, and rolled it back and forth, the idler chains remained the same. Any ideas why the tension on these two chains are so different? Also I noticed that the drive chain from the idler axle to the center axle is rubbing on the top of a cross member of the frame. The chain adjuster takes up slack on the bottom of the chain and has no effect on the top of the chain. Is this normal. I've cut out some plastic "L"s to place between the chain and the frame.

My Bigfoot was exactly the same. Follow the book and adjust the idler chain on the left side to specs. My chains also rub on the top of the frame/cross member( every argo I've looked at is like this. One with 200 hours was doing the same thing but never caused any problems. If you drive the machine with the floor pans out and watch the chains you will see that they don't rub while its moving - only when transitioning from forward to reverse. No big deal. Does you machine backfire when shutting it down?

Travis, the idler chains are ok now, I just loosened up the large locking bolts on the power pack and the tension on the left side went slack. I talked to my dealer and he said that some of his Argos are comming from the factory with a small plastic piece between the chain and the frame cross member. I just got done installing a small plastic L I fashioned from a piece of plastic drain pipe. I just cut it to size and taped a small hole in the frame and mounted the plastic L with a screw, rubber washer, and some lock-tite. My motor will backfire sometimes, but if I let it idle a little before I shut it down, then it does not backfire. Ron

My Response likes to backfire, too. If I let it idle before shutting down, no problem. My regional distributor also suggested that I apply the choke before switching off. That works, too. Since the Bigfoot & Response use the same engine, I put the "blame" on Briggs & Stratton. Any Max drivers have a similar problem?

I have heard all the newer 6x6s backfire. Quads are not immune to this either. I don't know what causes it but I do know how to fix it. Buy a 32mm Mikuni snowmobile carburetor. This carb is better in every way compared to the stock carb. The 32mm greatly increases air and fuel flow giving more power. It allows you to completely bypass the governor. Although not a problem on a Max, many Argos choke out while going up a steep hill. This carb will also cure that problem as it won't ever starve the engine for gas. Today after running my Max hard (how else would I run it?) I came into the garage and shut the engine off before I even let all the way off the throttle. It shut down quietly with no backfire.

Ron, check out www.denniskirk.com and look under the snowmobile carburetors. I got the 32mm for my 14hp. I would not go much bigger than that or it will be too much for the engine and the low end power will be gone. Your engine will react different than mine and will require different jetting. I need a leaner pilot jet and richer main jet. If you do get the carb I can help you with the jetting. You also have to make your own mount. I'll get a pic of mine tomorrow and put it in my profile.

Newmax - Expect to be addicted to off roading as soon as you step into your Max. All your time will be spent finding new terrain to tame. Enjoy your Max any time you can, it is the best ATV money can buy.
