i to have a hustler is my tranny a T 20 also it doesnt say so on the housing or in the manual it says steer-skid corporation, no numbers any info would be appiciated thanks r doyle

Bought a MaxIV today with a 16hp tech. Its in pretty rough shape but nothing that recovered seats and some cleaning won't fix. Enging runs like a top but I have no forward and reverse is almost non-exsistant with no turning. Before I ship it to Richard for a re-build I was wondering if anyone else has has this sort of problem with the T-20. Are they pretty simple to tear down and repair? I'm betting its shot - when I pulled the drain plug it was bone dry. Gotta wonder why people don't maintain things shuch as this. Thanks

Travis,
Put not over 1 quart of dextron II in it andd see if that makes it work (take out the bottom plug and let anything that will run out run out while you are filling it - there are some baffles for it to pass through so it takes a while for what goes in at the top to get to the "check level" plug). It is possible you just have leaky o-rings at the plungers. The tranny will not work without fluid in it very long if at all, but the bands could very well still be good. The T-20 either works or doesn't work (there is no kinda works).

Don't mean to take business away from Richard, but you can work on it yourself if you are mechanically inclined (no bigger hammer theory on T-20 rebuilds).

The plungers ( when the unit was in the machine) would travel out past the o-rings when the levers were pulled forward or backward which I don't think is right. It only took a few seconds for the entire qt. of fluid to run out once they come out this far. Are the friction bands hydraulically operated by these plungers or just attached to the bands with the o-rings serving to seal the unit? I think I'll open it up to take a look - are the common re-build parts pretty expensive from RI?
Once the machine is up & running I'll have to get tow hooks put on front & rear so I can pull it out with my Bigfoot:)

Ugh! That doesn't sound good Travis. I'm afraid of what you will find when you disassemble it. Since it had no fluid in it, I'd bet the bands and drums are shot. The plungers should definitely not pull out that far. The o-rings are just seals. If it was just one it might be a broken band but if it's all of them, well! Sounds like big bucks! Hope I'm wrong! Richard has parts too and whole transmissions I believe.

Travis: The T-20 is a manually operated (not hydraulically operated) plantary transmision. I agree with Tim, I think he is going to be right, the bands are going to be junk and maybe the drums also. To answer your question about how simple they are to work on; that depends, they are alot easier to work on than any auto tranny (no pump or any of those stupid check balls). And also like Tim and Mike said, Richard will have the parts to get your tranny in good shape in no time.

You might very well be dollars ahead to do a trade with Richard (send yours in and get one of his rebuilt ones) because without knowing just what everything is suppose to look like and how it is suppose to be, it could take you a couple of trys to get it to work. Sounds like maybe someone who shouldn't have, already tried to fix it - I can't imagine that all four bands could go bad at the same time. By the way, the Max IV has a trailer hitch that holds a clevis pin. No need for tow hooks and especially not in the front - how would anything get someplace the max could not?

What tires do you have? Please remember that you have a pre 1990 machine.

I was just trying to get the machine up and running as soon as possible and if that meant fixing it myself I'd also have a better understanding of the T-20. I would much rather purchase parts or service from Richard than RI. I always try to buy local or give busniess to the little guy.
I got the T-20 apart and found no broken bands but they were down to metal in spots. How thick is the friction material when new? Also one of the ring gear drums was wore paper thin( broke it off with my hands)on the outside edge. The rest of the drums look fine. I think the reason it wouldn't go into forward gear was the shift lever mis-adjusted.
I'll talk to Richard on Monday about parts cost and decide what to do from there.
Anyone have an exploded view of the T-20 or is there a shop manual avaible for it?
