Mr Richard,
I and wife love to fish. I am now without legs. I think a 6x6 might work good for us. To buy a maxII [basic], what are the extras do I need to keep it afloat? To me it seems that there is alot of parts[?]that are needed. Any help on this would be appreciated M.F. Campbell

if it's a new one expect it to float well for a year or two, then maintanence will be needed , like new bearings, ect.. but even if you dont want to replace them before they fail you can just through a builge pump in !
there verry powerfull and cheep also, just go to your local wallmart and check out fishing department, price them yourself, verry afordable and efective if you find your taking on some water just turn it on,
if your fishing you will also probly be required by law to have life jackets ect.. thats just comon cents and left up to you guys,
the 6x6 & 8x8's are amphibious first and already have what they need,
good luck with your purchus and i know you will love the outdoors with your gasoline powerd 6x6 wheelchair,
my friend tim okeefe and i are goin out rideing today in fact, he has just replaced some bearings in his bigfoot, he did the job himself! and he has bin paralized for years!
he also gos to most all the aatv events i have gon too and rides like theres no tomorrow!
he's in most of my videos too!
got to go now but have no fear about your 6x6 perchus,

Michael,
If you only want a max than disregard this post, but their was a gentleman at humphrey a few years back with your situation and hobby of fishing. He had an argo eight wheeler. He had a platform across the rear side seats level with the front seat that he fished from. He was from canada and told me and some friends he takes it out on lake huron and samon fishes! I also beleive he had the backrest of the seat modified by only having half a backrest so he could easily move from the drivers seat to the rear. He had a 15 hp. outboard for it if I remeber correctly, and pully points for an anchor. If you have any questions or anything you can email me. a live well under that platform and a cooler would easily fit also.

michael,if you buy the max you won't be able to put a motor of any kind on it. plus you won't have much room for you and your wife.if you want a max,you might consider the max IV,it has a back seat and quite a bit more room, for gear and coolers and what not.for about the same price as the maxII you could get an ARGO vanguard,it comes with a backseat and you can put either a trolling motor,or a small outboard ( i think upto 9 hp ).and with the 22in tires it should be easier to mount and dismount for you.
i'm sure there will be plenty of dealers on this post to tell you the good and bad for both machines,( i am not)i'm just a rider, and a hunter, and afisherman.and i like my ARGO bigfoot just fine for all those hobbies of mine. i hope this helps you out on your decision, which ever you decide you won't be dissapointed.welcome to the world of 6 wheeling.

Mike,

You said the Vanguard has a back seat. Is it a back seat or two jump seats facing each other? With a Max IV you have a real back seat with lots of room and you have the option of a 23 or 25 hp engine. What is the biggest engine an Argo has?

Well, I guess they need an outboard with the 2.5 mph they quote their machine can go on water. A max with the 25 hp engine and 26 inch tires is faster on water. Is this why Argo needs an out board?

Max guys, where are you? These Argo guys are always here touting their machines lets stand up and be heard. The Max IV is a real 4 person machine with much bigger engine options.

No need to start a fight just stating what needs to be stated.

Michael: A MAX IV with a 23 or 25h.p. Kohler and 26" tires would most likely work well for you.It would give two people lots of room and you would both have a seat to your selves. My neighbour has had his for 2yrs. now and the are still tight and no leaks and it has about 250 hrs+ on it.

robnwan, if you reread the first part of my last post, you will notice that i did suggest the maxIV.i stand corrected on the jump seats in the vanguard.and as far as going fast in the water....when was the last time you caught a fish moving thru the water as fast as your max will go? i use a trolling motor so i can get to the fish without chasing them all over the lake, and scaring the bejeevers out of them.like i said i am not a dealer, but i do know how to fish,i was just speakiing from experience.i happen to like the max,i just don't happen to own one.
and as far as # of passengers,i have had as many as 5 people in my bigfoot, and crossed a 15 acre pond with them. 2 adults and 3 teens.and yes we were all dry when we got back.i do not recomend this to anyone, and i won't be doing it again inthe near future.i just wanted to see if it would do it,and it did.
i personally do not care which machine that you or anyone else drives.if you own a six or eightwheeler and are happy with it....to me THAT is all that matters. i was merely offering my own opinion. if i hurt your maxs feeling i apologize.that was not my intention.i was just offering other possibilities.like i told michael, there WILL be other dealers to tell him the good and bad of both or all machines,i just forgot to mention the other owners ( sorry you all ).

Max offers larger engines, but they are no faster than any less hp machine. It all comes down to they are all governed engines. When they rev to the governed rmp weights inside pull the throttle back thru a linkage. So no more top speed is gained, although low end torque is improved.Argo could put a 25 hp engine in but it is not needed with the low range trans. You have twice the torque in low.Since max doesnt have a low range they need a larger engine for the low end torque. Why do you think they keep upping the hp. it is not for more speed ?

Hi Mike,

I was not attacking you and if it appeared as I was I apologize. I was simply trying to point out the difference and more or less put out a challenge to Max owners to step up and tout their machines.

I want this to happen but not really turn it in to a flame war. It is just that Argo owners are vocal and I would like Max owners to really be a little more out spoken about their machine.

Max owners, don't wipe me out. There are several of you who are great posters. My intent is not to start a heated debate but just point out the virtues of my machine of preference.

Thanks,
Robert

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By robnwan on Unrecorded Date: Edit

Eddie,

No attack but pointing out differences. My preference is Max. I disagree with you on your "but they are no faster than any less hp machine". The Max IV 900-T is faster than the Argo Bigfoot, the Response & the Conquest.

If you look at the Argo document 675-20 that Argo distributes you will see that Ontario Gear and Drive even has a printed land & water speed slower than Max. So, that statement you are making is incorrect.

I don't know any published document that says Argo has twice the torque but I am sure you will provide that documentation. I also have heard that Argo loses 50% torque when turning but that is not an official documentation.

I can quote with confidence that by Argo's own admission they are a slower machine since I get the numbers from their own literature.

Just want to state facts not hearsay. I do appreciate your input however.

Thanks,
Robert

Eddie, If you are talking within brands, I will partially agree with you. Argo uses certain gearing and so does RI - the gearing is what determines speed. Tire size, as well as sprocket size, pulley size, and transmission all makes up the gearing. The Max II machines are faster than the Max IV machines (increased tire size also increases speed). The Max IV 900T has a larger drive pulley (due, I think, to 25 horsepower limit of the driven pulley used on other Max models) and the 900T goes faster than any other Max IV. Highest RPM can also be adjusted between 3600 and 4000 RPM - the higher the RPM, the faster the machine will go. Some people say they bypass their governors allowing hose engines to rev even higher. I will leave this discussion only with the Max (where my knowledge is better).

I really don't think the engines keep getting bigger because of a low end torque issue (a 14 hp max will go everyplace any other max will go), I think they keep getting bigger because they can and it is a marketing issue. In the case of the 900T, it is a performance issue (but not directly HP related - as stated above, higher HP required a larger drive pulley). I am pretty sure the 900T is out selling all other Max models as well it should. The 900T, with 26 inch tires, out performs all other max by leaps and bounds. There is absolutely no other skid steer machine in current production that even comes close in performance. The 900T could well win over some quad people. With tire air pressure about 2 PSI (or less) they almost act like they have suspension.

WELL YOU CANT BELEAVE THE FACTORY LITERETURE COMPLEATLY, IN MANY CASES LAWYERS MAKE THEM UNDER ESTIMATE FIGURES FOR THE COMPANYS OWN PROTECTION.
AN EXAMPLE: IN THE OLDEN DAYS WHEN AUTO MANUFACTURES MADE OVER POWERED BIG BLOCK ENGINES SOME OF THEM HAD TO "UNDERESTEMATE" THE HP FROM THE ENGINES TO GET BY GOVERMENT SCRUTENY,AND SO ON,

Folks, regarding using an ampibian for fishing, I'd recommend against the Argo Vanguard and Argo Bigfoot. The Argo 6x6's are only rated to carry 350 lbs in the water. All of the Max's are rated at 500, and the Argo 8x8's are rated at 700 lbs. With just my wife and I my Vanguard2 was fine in the water, but with any cargo (like a cooler, or fishing tackle) it was overloaded. If you're going to spend a lot of time in the water, that difference in carrying capacity significant.

mike martindale (Wetsu), I have found that the slowly turning wheels of a max draw fish. I think the turbulence excites them or maybe they think it might be food coming. Suppose it could be coincidence, too or dumb luck.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Eddie Beddingfield on Unrecorded Date: Edit

Fred, You see my point very clearly,I was talking within brands. As you stated it comes down to over all gearing, being tire size, trans gearing, jackshaft gearing, clutch dia. That is why Bigfoot is odg fastest model, bigger tires.I FINALLY AGREE WITH FRED!!!!!!!!!!

ok so its not just me, heh heh heh, i too have found that fish like my max when im in a pond,
somebody told me they like anything that floats.

Well if that's the case, maybe you could drag a wide net behind and pull them all up on shore as you pulled out of the water :)

no fred it is not dumb luck,or coincidence.fish are creatures of habit, especialy when it comes to eating. when the water turns up, so does the food sources for most fish.larva, shrimp(fresh water )plankton, and minnows to mention a few.i have done some of my best fishing around the docks, and the boat ramps.also i have dropped an anchor and done the same thing.it churns up the bottom.and thekey words here SLOWLY TURNING WHEELS, not my max is faster in the water than you argo.that is not why we are in this particular post.it seems to me that when ever anybody wants to ask any question about any brand of 6 wheeler it ends up in a debate.if i read correctly, michael wanted to know about the maxII for him and his wife to go fishing.( RIGHT )? and all of a sudden it has once again turned into a (who's got the best what ever).michael, save yourself a couple thousand dollars and get a BASS BUDDY,a two or three person plastic bass boat, available at any bass proshop.as aatv owners/dealers we should be helping this man find the RIGHT machine for his needs, and let him make his own choice,as we all did.

robert, there is no need to appolgize to me,you own a max and i have an ARGO,congradulations on your choice.do you like it???if so than you have the right to brag about it.as do i with my argo. you wanted to state what needed to be stated, well so did i,welcome to america,,,, that is our right, for which i fought and will continue to fight for.

and thats also why people are asking for a bigfooted 8x8, like the prototype often sean at humphrey, odg may not be happy with it yet but im not the only person who can see the posabilitys here

* mremember the without legs part??,
is his wife saposed to put the plastice bass boat and all there gear in the water herself?
hell just ask tim okeefe how much better it is doing the off road things himself!
(and that also includs water travle )
you can only fish in a bass boat
money well spent on a 6x6 and he can put it into the water himself!
i think the question as to a basic max II comes from a buget consern, and he may well find a used max 4 or argo of some type within said buget, and where theres a will theres a way,
like it says on my profile "nesesity is a mother"

i was reading an ad for a max for sale and it stated something about a speed clutch from the factory that makes the machine able to go 40 mph. has anyone heard of this.

david,
i was being sarcastic about the boat;
since i don't know michael's financial situation,if he was going to get a maxII,i figured for about the same money he get some extra room with the vangaurd.i believe ODG is running a special on them...5999.00,for a 2002,or 2003,i,m not sure which.( at least that is what my dealer is selling them for, incase some one wants to jump in my ass again).
like i said before,i don't care what he gets.for the room and the height,i sugessted the argo,if he wants a max for sure then i would suggest the maxIV. if he REALLY wants alot of room and low to the ground ( the seats )that is, ( remember the guy has no legs )then perhaps the response or the conquest.
if i were a max owner,i would have leaned towards it a little more.but i don't so i pushed what i own, an ARGO. it may not be good for you or him,but it works for me,with my cooler and my tackle, and my rods, and my knife ,and my pistol,or my rifle, which ever i prefer at the time.
one more thing before i go, michael, if you are still reading this, richard,as well as some others, have some machines for sale in the classified section of this website.you could probably find what you are looking for there.
