Hello everyone!

After sitting in my garage for almost a year (SIGH), I finally got around to tinkering with my MAX. I got the broken starter mounting bracket replaced and put the starter back in (what a PAIN!). BUT... still no go when I spun the key!? After much cursing and head scratching, I discovered that the gremlin taunting me this time around was broken wires inside the battery cable.

When I checked through the charging system, I noticed that the cable felt kinda week about and inch back from the terminal coupling. I cut the sheath and discovered that the wires were almost all broken. Only three or four were actually whole. I wiggled it to get more of the wires to touch and it cranked right over.

I took a quick trip to my local TSC (Tractor Supply Co.) store and replaced the bad part with a nice new 19" 6 ga. battery terminal wire, total cost = $3.70+tax.

Finally took her out for a spin! Great to be MAXin' again!! Barring any further complications, I will DEFINATELY be at Humphrey this year!

dirty; glad ya got yer starter problems behind ya, simple things right. also sumtimes burnt fuses can cause grief as well. afriend of mine ripped his motorcycle apart once, only to find out later it had no petro in the tank!

I can sympathize with your friend on that one! I alway seem to do that sort of stuff (making a simple job into a gawdawful nightmare). My best friend is currently trying to track down an electrical bug in his newly-aquired '81 Yamaha 650 Special. It won't charge up the battery and most of the major elec. parts have already been replaced. He suspects a broken wire somewhere in the harness. Hopefully he will have to time fix it before fall so he and I can go out cruisin' together.

I'm just glad I didn't go and buy a new starter and then find the real villain. At least I'm running again! That's really all that matters.

With my toy up and running now, I have made concrete plans to attend this year's Michigan MAXARAMA and the New York Humphrey Jamboree. Yeehaw!!!!!

New Kohler 20hp installed - Finally up and running after blowing the Briggs 16hp in my Max IV. The new Kohler didn't quite bolt right in like it was supposed to, but close. Had to take a torch to the engine stand to make room for the driven clutch. RI was supposed to send me everything I needed for change over, but they apparently didn't know the ignition switch was different too. Overall they were very good though.

This whole discussion has gotten me thinking... Anyone ever had problems with the starter in the argo conquest? Just wondering....how the heck I would get the damn thing running if my starter ever went out, since there is no pull start. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions, if I ever ran into that situation??? Just trying to go into the wilderness with a plan of action.

i knew a guy who figured out how to put recoil starter on a vangard, i don't have details and i lost track of the guy but i saw it and it worked fine,

Installing a pull starter on a Vanguard is easy, just order the parts from a BS dealer, or do as I did and buy the whole thingy used from Richard Clark

conquest 600cc kawaski motor hand starting can be done with a strap wrapped around the clutch shaft. but i have been told some battery power must exist to make the spark plug work.

leave the belt on and wrap a 3/4 inch nylon strap about 6 ft. long around the outer half of the drive pully on the motor, That is the way it is done on snowmobiles in case of a emergency.

Harry,
Do you have any info on the Michigan Maxarama?
I live in Jackson Mi. and recently bought a Max2 and would like to find events/places to ride.
Any info you have on the Maxarama would be appreciated.
