lazermann instead of taking the screen off just drill some evenly spaced holes through it to get some extra airflow that way most mud and water will still stay out while allowing your briggs to stay cool .

Thanks for the advice Big Daddy, I'll give that a try before I cut it out. I have a bilge pump in mine, that's why I want to keep as much stuff out as possable. It tends to clog up the pump.
