I recently purchased an Attex 6 wheeler with a 18 hp Vanguard motor which runs great. The ignition switch was relocated from the motor to the dash. The engine starts up fine with the key but when you go to shut it down with the key the engine tone changes but does not shut down. I must use the choke to shut the engine down. I am afraid of hurting the engine. I would appreciate any advice on fixing my problem. Thank you. Matt

I'm wondering if it is only grounding one cylinder ?????
Mike also makes a good point about the grounding. It may be trying to find ground through something else connected to the switch.

Thank you for the help. I ran a ground wire from the switch to the frame. With the extra ground it works fine now. So the switch must have been insulated like you said. Thanks again everyone for the help. Matt

I have been having a problem like this with a 16hp vanguard in an Argo vanguard 2.

I drove the Argo all day one day and didn't have any noticeable problems. I shut it down with the key. The next day I went out and tried to start it and it would not start. The motor would try to turn over but I had low voltage. I tried the lights and got nothing. I check all the fuses and connections and everything appeared ok. I jumped it and it fired right up. After removing the cables I did not get any fluctuation on the voltage gauge. I let it run and it would run but if I turned on the lights it drained the battery rapidly. The motor kept running. I then attempted to turn the motor off by key and it would not turn off. I eventually got the engine turned off by cutting off the fuel. I replaced the ignition switch and it would start and shut off. The voltage gauge did not fluctuate and was not charging. I replaced the voltage regulator and it is charging fine now. I tried to shut it off and it would not turn off again. So I am at a loss of what I need to do now. I'll try a jumper lead from the ground on the ignition switch to a better ground.

What wire actually goes into the vanguard and control the ignition? All I have is one wire coming out of the voltage regulator. So I am confused what is controlling it.

Any information or ideas would be a big help.

Jerry

Ok, I Found out the problem with the help of a mirror and bright light. The ground wire next to the voltage regulator had broken off and had flipped up out of sight. I repaired it and it is starting and charging and shutting down correctly now.

WILL I JUST HELPED A BUDDY WITH THIS PROBLEM. THEIR ARE 2 DIODE'S IN THE COIL WIRES ON A VANGUARD ONE FOR EACH COIL. THEY ARE FOR THE MOTOR SHUT OFF. THIS WIRE RUNS FROM THE COIL TO THE KEY SWITCH. IF THE DIODE IS OPEN THE COIL WILL NOT GROUND OUT WITH THE KEY SWITCH. THEY COST ABOUT 85 CENTS AT RADIO SHACK. LOOK AT A VANGUARD MANUAL AND YOU CAN SEE THEM AND THEY HAVE A TEST SETUP TO CHECK THEM OUT.
HOPE THIS HELPS
