I am the proud new owner of a 1989 MAX IV. Everthing functions fine, especially after changing engine and trans oil. I did use the GM differential additive. As things stand, I get an 8-9 inch spread between the laterals. The trans operates smooth in forward, reverse, and readily transfers power. Should I adjust the T-20 bands and what should I expect the max spread between the lateral to be? I have seen numbers between 5 - 11 inches for proper lateral adjustment. I could use some pratical experience and guidance on this subject.

Thanks

Isaac is right. The steering levers generally should not be adjusted until the travel from all the way forward to all the way back is in excess of 9 inches. I think it is about 6 inches on a new machine (I would probably adjust before it was eleven). When you adjust the T-20 bands, all you are doing is adjusting the travel. If the travel is too tight, the bands never fully release and it will not have a neutral position on the steering levers. If there is too much travel, it is harder to keep the levers all the way forward (spring only stretches so far) and your hands might bump the dash and you have to pull farther back making it likely the seat or some body part might keep it from going all the way back.

Please be sure to only fill the T-20 to the "fill to" plug (the lower plug on the left hand side).
