I am restoring an old scrambler (previous owner lost starter) and I am wondering how you get an alternator/generator to charge your battery. Do you just pull the battery out and charge it once in a while and charge it with a charger or is there some special way to hook up the starter so it charges the battery? I really have no idea how to get an alternator on it because one of my friends doesn’t have one and its such a hassle charging the battery very often.

What motors do you guys have ? As far as I know, most of the 2-stroke snowmobile type motors have alternators under the flywheels, electric start or not. The alternators on 4-stroke motors I don't know that much about, but I would assume that if they came with a starter there is probably an alternator built in. If the starter is belt driven is could be a starter/generator which I have seen on lawn tractors.

I have an old 4 stroke tecumseh 16hp OHV Seems to me like most of the starters dont have them built in because the teeth that catch on the flywheel to start the engine retract back into the starter while the engine is running. My starter on my engine connects to the flywheel, and I cant think of any good solution to my alternator problem, I wish I could do some mower like set up but unfortuanately I dont know much about engine electrical.

Sorry, I worded that wrong, what I meant was if the motor came with a starter, the motor probably had an alternator built in (not built in to the starter) I would guess it is under the flywheel. Look for an extra wire(s) that is seperate from the ignition system, it may be only one or as many as four.
