I am trying to rebuild this engine, I need to re sleeve the cylinders, getting lots of rattle noise, after putting in new valves and push rods, would like to put new pistons and re sleeve but can't find anyone that has sleeves for these engines. Are they that rare or should I be looking for the rattle else where? Please help wife is having a cow because it is not running.

The cylinders can be bored out and Briggs sells new pistons for up to .030" oversize. Did you adjust the valves properly? They can make a lot of noise if not done right. How old is the engine and was it run out of oil? The Vanguard usually out lasts everything around it.

Is it a worn out clutch making the rattling sounds? If the bushings in the drive clutch wear out....it will sound like an engine knock at idle.

If the valves are adjusted loose it will make a lot of noise. My valves are adjusted at .012 and somebody once asked if it was a diesel.
