I will be leaving NH on Sunday, the 21st going to Gettysberg, PA. I will then be going to Miami, Fl. I will be towing my Max IV on a trailer. I have been told that the popping noise I hear when making a sharp turn is more than likely worn sprocket(s). I am new to AATV's and just purchased this very clean 1989 machine. I would like to have a trustworty shop check it out and repair it as necessary. If anyone knows of such a shop please give me the details so I can contact them and make arangements. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You can check out the dealer locator on www.maxatvs.com and find one close to your route. It might be best to just make the repair yourself. That way you can learn a little about the machine and save some money. Everything on the Max is pretty strait forward.

gary the chains where out and strech long before the sprokets do so it may be simple replacement of chains

Again, thanks Brandon for all the help and advice. I got your email and appreciate all you told me.

David that's the problem I have. I don't know enough about these machines to tell what the problem is exactly. I think I will be better off taking it to someone that has experience and can better advise me. There is a dealer located about 80 miles from where I am in NH so I will try to take it to them before I leave on my trip south.

I will let all know what the problem is and post back when it is fixed. Maybe someone can benefit from it. Thank you David and Brandon.

Gary,
You can also call RI and ask them for a person that they trust. Most all dealers are good, but some dealers don't have a clue on how to fix the Max. Someone from RI should be able to tell you how would be good for you. You might even when you drop it off, ask if you can stay and watch. since you are new to AATV's, you will see as Brandon said, these are very easy machines to work on.

gary,speaking from an argo point of view....i was new to the aatv scene a couple of years ago.but one thing i learned from this post,it is easier,cheaper,and faster to do the work on these machines yourself.if you go back into the archives on the board you will most likely find all the info you need to do these repairs.and like brandon said the more you learn from doing,the easier it becomes,and you will be able to do it all in the future.

Hello All,

As a followup I took my Max IV to ROBERT BERGEVIN 6 WHEEL ATV SALES located in WEST SWANZEY, NH. When I got there I met the guy who works on the Max for BERGEVIN named Andy. David you were right. It needs new chains. The sprockets and bearings are in good shape. As time was a factor, Andy adjusted all the chains but recommended I replace them when I return to NH in December. He showed me how to take everything apart and adjust the chains as well as talked to me about how to replace them. He changed the engine oil and filter, tuned the engine (new plugs and adjusted throttle and choke cables) and took the carb apart and cleaned it. Replaced the gas cap with a new one. It runs great now and I feel I have found a person to help me do repairs that I fully trust. He showed me a lot and encourged me to learn how to do things on it like Brandon and others have suggested.

Now for the best part of all. Andy called the people at Max and gave them my serial no. It's a 1995 machine not a 1989 machine as I was told when I was buying it. It doesn't get any better than this.

I am leaving NH on Sunday and going to PA for a couple of days. Then I am going to my property in DeLand, Fl. It is there I will use the Max a lot. I will let everone know how it goes later.

Thanks to all for the great help and I have found a lot of new friends here on this board. I hope I will be in a position some day to return the warm welcome and help I have received.

Oh, almost forgot.... popping noise was apparently being caused by loose chains and foreign objects in the the bottom around the chains and sprockets. Andy, with a magnet fished out several pieces of metal to include a nice 1/4" socket. :)

maybe some time when your back in NH. we can ride together, thers a few of us 6x6'rs in mass that like hooking up a trailer for trail rideing in groops,
