Has anyone ever done a custom job on their Max II exhaust? I have a '96, and I'd like to try and duplicate the inside-the-body and out-the-rear setup that the current Maxes use.

The flexpipe on my Max is ROTTED clean through. The muffler isn't in much better shape. Too much mud and slop, and not enough cleaning afterwards. (Shame on me!) I'd like to use stainless pipe and a stainless muffler, just to more or less shut down any possibility of similar problems in the future.

Better still if I could re-route the exhaust pipe and muffler to the rear of my Max and out the lower half of the body. This would require extensive modification of the existing manifold, or more likely, a whole new custom-built unit. I'd love to do it sweet and right, but don't want to pay more for my exhaust system than I did for my Max!

Any suggestions or personal experience with this problem from the assembled masses here???

TIA
-Harry

My muffler rotted off on my 18hp briggs. I took the advice from the message board about engine mods. I wound up making my own exhaust header with pipe from the local exhaust shop and a supertrapp muffler. Anyway, the power improvement was incredible. I could not turn my 6ply gator's untill I did this. In short, it is a must for cheap power.

Tim OK: Can you give us some more details (or pix) about your exhaust system? I am in the midst of a repower on my early 70's Max II, and will likely need to make an exhaust. Plans are for a 20 hp Briggs. Thanks.

ONLY DRAWBACK TO THE HIGHER POWER FROM A MODIFYED SYSTEM IS THE NEW HUMPHREW JAMBOREE PLACE COPPERRIDGETRAILS.COM
SAYS WE ARE WELCOM WITH HELMETS AND FACTORY EXAUST SYSTEMS!
NONE OTHERS NEED SHOW UP!
IN SHORT THAT LEAVES MYSELF WITH A FACTORY MUFELER (FOR A DIFERENT MOTOR)AND TIM O +TIM S
WITHOUT PROPER MUFELERS,
HOW MANY OTHERS HAVENT THE RIGHT MUFELERS FOR THE JAMBOREE?

A tip for anyone modifying exhaust systems for more power - don't forget to change your carb settings / jetting to suit. If you find you are getting more power chances are good your engine is running lean (and hotter).
And louder is not necessarily better, power wise.

well that's a tall order mr. and mrs. humphrey, to implement a factory exhaust and then to define, and now enforce it!

Harry, if you do change your exhaust to the inside the body out the back like the newer Max's,
make sure you insulate your choke cable with some form of heat wrap if it is routed anywhere near the exhaust. I have a 2001 MaxII with that type of exhaust and what happened was the jacket on the choke cable deformed from the heat and bound so tight to the cable that you could not pull the choke on. In fact the knob on my choke pulled off from trying to force it.
I called RI to make them aware of the problem but they were alresdy aware of it and were very good about replacing the choke cable for free along with some heat wrap and instructions on where to put it. It works fine now.

David, what the website actually states is this.

ALL MACHINES MUST HAVE STOCK OR STOCK EQUIVLANT IN NOISE EMMISSIONS MUFFLERS. We hope to be able to move the course so that will not be neccessary but it is rquired for now.
Regretably no dirt bikes until we can make changes in our trail location. We hope by next year.

It souds to me like the trail comes close to some place where you must keep the noise level down so as long as your mufflers noise level is equivelent to a stock muffler there should not be a problem. Hopefuly this is the case with your muffler and others.

WELL TIM OKEEF CAN ADD AND SUBTRACT DISCS FROM HIS SUPERTRAP MUFFELER TO CHAINGE POWER AND NOISE RATIO, BUT HE WILL LOUSE CONCIDERABLE POWER ANYWERE NEAR AS QUIOT AS STOCK, TIM S MAY HAVE SOME TROBLE WITH HIS AS IT IS A LITTLE LOUDER THEN A STOCK MACHINE,? BUT MAYBE NOT MUCH LOUDER THEN STOCK FOR A 23 HP BRIGS, WICH HE HAS,
MY VEHICLE CAME WITH A 4 STROKE YEARS AGO AND PREVIOS OWNWER PUT IN A KZ ENGINE, SAME TYPE AS USED TO BE IN THE OLDER MAX VEHICLES BUT HE KEPT THE 4 STROKE MUFELER, I HAVE BIN TOLD IT WAS THE QUIOTEST 440 2 STROKE PEPOLE HAVE HERD AND ALSO TOLD IT WAS QUITE LOUD BY OTHER PEOPLE, SO I AM STILL CONFUSED WHERE ID STAND AS WELL,
I CAN SAY I DON'T NEED ANY NOISE PROTECTION TO RIDE IN IT ALL DAY, IT AINT THAT BAD! BUT DECABLE LEAVEL HASENT BIN MESHURED,
WHAT ABOUT THE POOR BASTERDS WHO HAVE CAR ENGINS IN THERE MAX VEHICLES, WHATS THE STOCK NOISE LEAVEL?
MY VEHICLE WAS MADE IN 1986, WHAT WAS THE STOCK NOISE LEVEL IN 86 FOR A 440 EQUIPED VEHICLE?
ITS A 460 MILE TRIP OUT THERE AND ID HATE TO MAKE IT FOR NOTHING,
