What`s the safest method for leaving the ice surface and entering open water with a 6x6 Argo?
Would backing in be safer or does it really matter?

Kevin, is the pic in your profile your new ARGO?? It is really nice looking. I am rediculously jelous. I love that camo design like you wouldn't believe. I don't have any experiance going from ice to water, but I would say that going in very slowly frontward would be best. TO get, out, I would have to say back out to use the engine weight to raise the back and get on the ice. If you are running tracks, don't go in the water. By the sounds of it, they are crap in water.

Yes it is Dave.
I`m going to hold off on buying any tracks until I see how the Argo handles in the area I`ll be using it.
From my cabin I can go down through a bush trail to a shallow lake, go down the creek about fifty yards, over a small beaver dam, down the creek another fifty yards or so then into a clearing and run about a half mile down to a hay marsh where I can duck hunt.
The only way to get in there now is by boat and if the water gets rough you can get into some serious trouble real quick.
It will be much safer to access on land in the Argo.
I can be in there at daybreak and won`t have to leave until dusk.

If the ice is broken in large chunks, it really doesn't matter. I've gone in forward and in reverse. Either works adequately. If you think you are going to drive off of the edge, it will just break away and you will slide in. Coming out of the water only works if the chunks are large enough to tip slightly and drive onto.

tim okeefe and pete cagle did it plenty of times on jan,2000 video, some times you push a pile of ice ahead of you that holds your hull away from edge, but try again and you might get a bite on it and beleave it or not you can drive up out of the water onto ice,
but it can take a number of try's
