Tips for riding in a tamarack swamp

Route 6x6 Discussion Board: Driving Tips and Techniques: Tips for riding in a tamarack swamp

Hello,

I am a new Max owner (Max IV 18HP) with 80 acres
of tamarack swamp to ride in. I took it in the
swamp last weekend and got stuck a few times
on fallen, half submerged logs. Does anyone out
there have any tips on how to drive in this stuff?

Also, the engine keeps stalling out after I get
stuck. Any ideas as to why?

Thanks in advance!

Dave

I wonder if tracks might help here?

Dave, what tires do you have? Soft tires are better for logs although the 26" tires would be best for deep mud. It just depends on the terrain. Have you had any luck recently?

Actually, the biggest problem is that I get
caught between two fallen logs that are about
the same distance apart as the Max. The
machine goes nose down after the first log but
doesn't have enough room to get up on the
next one. The front wheels can't climb the
second log because the machine is tilted down
from the first log. I don't know if tracks would
help in this case.

The other problem is finding ground to turn on.
The terrain is hillocks and dips with little
room for turning. Sometimes I need to
turn and the wheels with grip are the ones I
need to brake to make the turn.

Tracks would probably help in the section that is
more grassy though. But tracks are pretty spendy
and I don't have as much of a problem there.

Thanks for your suggestion.

Dave

Brandon,

I have the 26" tires. They were inflated at
2.5 PSI.

I did have pretty good luck with my wife and
myself. I went MUCH further than a Polaris
4x4 my friend had a couple of years back.
But I did get stuck to the point of using the
winch a couple of times.

When the Max was loaded with more people was
when I had more problems. Which makes sense
because it is heavier. I also tried to go
over the same trail I came in.

Later,

Dave
