Mike,
I have managed to break both rear axles on my 99 Max IV. Recreative replaced both of them with the new one piece dual sprocket at no cost to me. Also, take a very close look at where the transmission is mounted to the frame for cracks. This is a common problem when the Max breaks a rear axle. Recreative makes a reinforcement kit that is welded in to stiffen up this area. All you have to do is call them.

HEY RANDY:
* remove bolt from sprocker
* remove grease zert
* remove 3 bolt that secure outer bearing flange
*use plenty penetrant oil between axle and sprocker bushing...
* the "right" tool to remove axle will be a 3 leg puller with slidding hammer attachment...but 1 pound hammer on altmost "straight" out direction will release the bearing from frame.....
* install new axle, new bearing, new grade 8 bolts.....don't forget to apply blue thread locker prior to clean them with brake and parts cleaner...for future repairs and safety (in case that some nut --even with blue locker on it-- desides to go "nuts" and get loose i preffer to install flange bolts from inside to out...(nuts agains the tire)..that way it's easy to check condition prior to that noman's land bouncing tour.........

I doubt you will be able to straighten it with
anything but a professional setup. It is just too hard to get it true. Anything but true will damage your bearings (better look at those closely anyway). For me a new axle is the way to go.

What are you guys hitting that causes the axles to bend? I tend to go real slow through the woods, so that's no real concern of mine. I do hum along pretty quick through the fields though, and there are nice dips and bounces often sending me and Max into the air (hops and bounces, no big air). Is this too hard on the axles? It doesn't really seem that hard to me, but I really don't want to bend the axles either. I'm a newby and don't want to kill my new toy.

tom i have stratend mine about a hundred times,
fact is it can be done easaly & close enoph to work out fine,
a little woble wont hurt anything cause the bearings are sphricle, (self aligning)
the factory dosent get the axele & bearing alignment perfict on any machine they make, the sphricle bearings are a nesesety for this reason,
i mention pete cagles site due too the pic's
he had there,
you know 2 pics are worth more than 2000 wordes right??
he watched me do it several times and piced it up from me,
chris when your speeding along in the feilds you might hit a rock, that would do it,
somtimes i tag a tree too,
youd likely know it when it happens!
one thing you can do that helps is keep the tire preshure as low as you can without inviting problems like bead leaks or pinching tire's agenst rim's

I'm surprised you can run out of true axles. I'm more and more impressed with how practical these things are. I would still be worried. There are degrees of straight and the components (sprocket, chain, bearings) physically connected to the bent axle will certainly take added stresses and wear a bit faster. How much is a new axle anyway? I recently removed all the axles in my response to rebuild the bearings and replace a few sprockets. I bought the machine in a terrible state. It had been owned by a construction company and had tears in the belly pan (a dent in the frame that prevented the transmission from turning the drive axle) and 2 cracks right through the frame. My dealer said it had the sh*t kicked out of it like he had never seen before. All the axles were true. I put them up against each other and turned them without any light passing between them (except slots where the outer bearing sleeve had worn groves in the axle). My point is if you are bending your axles that easily I would be looking for another cause. Is it the same axles always bending (of course the fronts are the ones most likely to take bad hits). Just a thought.

does anyone know how much it would cost to have an axle replaced on a 200 max 1v.
