I was able to use the serial number for the hull number here in Minnesota.

Later,

Dave

no, they do not.since they are not classified as a boat untilllll they hit the water. i was told by dept.of wildlife and parks to use the serial number,i live in ks.so i think it could be nation wide, because it is also that way in missouri.hope this helps, sorry it took so long to answer.i just came across this tonight.dave, have you ever made a bordercrossing into canada????? with your machine? i'm trying to find out what kind of crap i'll have to endure to go there with my argo.

Mark -

Good luck with the bureacracy. Down here at the lake anything that floats and has a motor is a power-boat (needing registration), unless it has powered wheels in which case it is a vehicle and not a vessel (does not need boat registration). Whether you need boat registration or not really depends on who you talk to - or who wants to write a ticket. Of course, I still have not figured out how to mark "8 wheeler" down for boat hull style.

doug, wild life and parks had the same problem.and since i didn't follow thru with getting my bigfoot registered i can't tell you how they did it.i couldn't see paying $35.00 for my argo that would not spend that much time in the lakes, that is what my starcraft is for. course since i got my bigfoot the boat dosn't see that much water anymore either haha. mark plead ignorance or insanity, just get it wet. good luck

in new york I had to register my Attex as a boat and as an ATV. The boat registration was priced by the foot, so for ten bucks it is worth the laugh. Use your VIN number.

Here in Massachusetts my next door neighbor is the Harbor Master. He told me that my vehicle has permanent wheels and is therefore predominantly a land vehicle. It needs RV registration, but no boat registration. As you guys say, it's simply a matter of who you ask. I'm sure I'll get a ticket some time from some other official with a different viewpoint.

One of my customers had the "its a boat because it goes in the water" problem and the state title department wanted me to sign a title application so he could register it as a boat. I refused and looked up the laws dealing with Off Highway vehicles to find out which department was responsible for enforcing the laws. Here in Montana that is the Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks. I contacted the enforcement division and asked for a legal opinion as to whether Max could be in the water without a boat decal (and coastguard numbers) without risk of getting a fine. I asked for a letter to the head of the title department with a copy to me. The decision was that the Max is predominately a land machine and only needed the OHV decal; only machines designed to be primarily used in the water are boats and require boat numbers. I will send a copy of that letter with every title application so my Montana customers will not have that problem again

Montana boat law requires a decal on motor boats ten feet and longer in length. I did not need to use that in my argument, but since the Max is only eight feet long, it would have been exempted from having a decal anyway.

The reason for this post is to suggest that those of you who have trouble or questions concerning what your skid steer is or how it should be registered should read your motor vehicle laws and find out who is mandated to enforce those laws. Contact that department and request a statement from them. I, for sure, will show my letter to whomever tries to tell me I am driving a boat.

In Arizona, it's simple: put the Argo in the water, it better be registered as a boat. Arizona assigns hull numbers on boats that do not have them.

You can have an Argo titled and registered in Arizona as an ATV, but it doesn't help much. The US Department of Transportation classifies an Argo as a vehicle that cannot be made "street legal" because of the skid steering. I chose to title my Argo Conquest as an ATV for documentation purposes relating to insurance. I concurrently register my Argo as a 10' inboard drive [because of the wheel paddling] boat in Arizona. If I am found in my Conquest in any body of water in Arizona by Arizona Game & Fish Department or Arizona State Parks employees without boat registration, it's a citable offense.

If I add pontoons to stabilize the Conquest and a outboard motor, I understand that I will be forced to re-register the Conquest as an "inboard/outboard" 10-foot boat, based on the Arizona regulations
