hello..

i have owned an argo for almost all of my life. its a 83 mangum. it is an amazing worker but has no "fun" power.

what im looking to do is buy a used max. i am on a tight budget. maby an early 80s max ll. and droping in a 480 or 500 cc sno mobile 2 stroke. they go used here for about 300 for a motor in good condition.

can someone please gimi some insight into this. i am not very knologable about doing these kina things to aatv's. what are some of the problems i may encounter. maby a 2 stroke isnt a good combo? but i am on a tight budget so i figured a 2 stroke has the best bang for the buck. i am very experenced with motors, mainly around sno mobiles and cars. i think the max has the better drive train for the power with the t 20. any comments are apriciated.

If you are going to use a Max II I think it is a good idea to use a later model Max that has the inner bearing instead of the bushing used on earlier Maxes. I would also make a set of chain tensioners that have sprokets like the new Max IV uses instead of the nylon covered slides that the Max II uses. These are two areas that should be addressed before going with the big hp in the Max. Another important part--use a roll cage or roll bar with seat belts. Also when you go to changing motors from 4 to 2 stroke you will need to change the drive clutch that attaches to the output of the motor (because the springs are different for a 4 than a 2 stroke). Unless you can find used clutches these can be one of the most expensive parts to your speed machine. Myself I would stick with a 4 stroke motor and go with as big of displacement you can find running moderate compression and use the drive clutch from Max IV and hold on tight.

ok. what years have the inner bearings, also which will be an easier conversion a bigger 4 stroke or swaping in a 2 stroke. im concerned that with a 2 stroke ill have no trail riding power, which is what i want. i dont want high top speed, as i feel these machines are unsafe at 45 mph +. what are ure suggestions for 4 stroke. i dont want to use any car motors ect. but like i said im on a budget. is it possible swap the inner bearings, inplace of the nylon, what will i gain from this. i have a good understanding of how the argo works but not the max.

My suggestion is to find an Attex for cheap and make it work. The speed and acceleration is awesome, but it is dangerous. Once you get over 25 Mph, every little bump causes you to bounce out of the seat and the steering is very touchy. I explain high speed in a 6x6 as "tunnel vision", your eyes are focused straight ahead and your hands are braced to move very slowly so you don't throw yourself out of control. Most people equate a skid steer to a bobcat that uses hydraulics where you're in control of every movement, a 6x6 atv throws that dreaded neutral into the equation. At speed there's a very delicate balance of acceleration, slight changes in direction by letting one side go into neutral and then there's controlled braking which can be very uncontrollable when going fast. There is nothing that can compare to a fast 6x6 , but don't over build your atv because most of the time you ride, you will not be wide open throttle. If you put a 500 into a Max and you are used to driving an Argo with a 4-stroke, the Max will probably scare the @#$$@$^&!! out of you. By the way , if you find an old Max, it probably has the 2-stroke in it already. I finally had the chance to drive a brand new Max IV with a 18hp briggs in it. After driving my Attex for 2 years, I was both impressed and disappointed in the Max. The Max was very smooth,quiet and brand new, but it lacked the exhilaration of nailing the throttle and getting thrown back in the seat. I would very much like to buy a new Max IV because of the 4-stroke engine and low speed torque, but if I ever do, I'm also keeping an Attex!

Liflod, You should try the Max IV 900T with the 26 inch tires if you want that extra burst. It's not going to be as exhilarating as a machine that will go 60 MPH, but much improvement over all other Max IVs. Actually it has more power than you will use most of the time, BUT!!

I have been trying to get a ride or drive a 900T, but I have not found a dealer yet with a decent place to test drive one. The 600t I drove was basically in an open field. The only thing I could really test was the acceleration. Sooner or later I will buy a new Max IV. I just picked up an older model that I started to work on. I have to replace the frame and it did not come with an engine. I do have an extra 400 JLO that I will put into it until I can afford a 4-stroke and a clutch to go with it. I only like the 2 stroke for the high speed/rpm bursts. You can relieve alot of stress with a good 10 minute ride!!!

I am a Max dealer north of you just outside of Sharon, PA. The only Max IV I have in stock right now is a 500T, but I do have a Max II 850T with the new 23hp Kohler that you could demo. I plan on ordering a Max IV 900T the first of the year for a demo model. I do have hills, mud, water and woods on my land. Email if you are interested.
