well i called ODG because i wana pump up the hp on my old 83 mangum..well i call and when i ask how much hp the tranny can support they say 20 hp is at its limit..well i know they wont tell me higher so i wont blame them if the tranny blows on me..but what is the largest amount of hp that this argo tranny could safely support

most of them were aprox 38hp!

They really told you 20 HP? Ha ha ha ha ha. And this, from a company that builds gear cases for a living!! I've had alot of motorcycle tranny's apart in my time and the argo tranny has it all over them. They have really, really BIG bearings in them, with BIG straight cut gears and fair to good shaft sizes. Scott, both the Argo and the T20 are very very strong tranny's and will handle lots of HP. In my opinion the limiting factor is going to be the belt, not the mechanical parts in the tranny. I would guess that the belt could hold about 60 to 80 HP. My stock Attex is around 45HP and I have not had any belt problems so I would think 60 to 80 HP would be very possible. Someone on here said that some guy put a Metro 3 banger in a 6X6 and he had some belt problems with it, and I think they put out more torque than a small 2 or 4 stroke. In short, just go for it. If you have belt problems, just back it down a bit.

If you up the hp, does that mean the clutch (driven and driver) work much faster to keep up the speed? Also, would that not also cause faster wear on all the other moving components? If these things are moving much faster and wearing faster, won't that mean forking over more dough? Than if it really will cost more in the long run, is it really worth uping the hp?

In my opinion upping the hp a little will make no differece on drivetrain wear, if you stay at 3600rpm , like the factory moters are governed too. If you put in a 100hp smowmobile engine , you change thew max from 3600 to around 10,000 rpm , depending on the engine . these machines are for a 3600rpm moter with a peak torque at around 2,500 . not an engine that produces peak torque at 7,000 rpm . My opinion is save your money , and use it to by gas for you current stock machine

WELL YER MISSING THA POINT
a 100 hp 2-stroke as you say might produce max
tork at 7000 rpm but the idea is to use the big
ol 2 stroke engines becaus even at 2500 rpm
theres still enoph ta do tha job! :)

What does more hp do if you govern the rpm to 3600? That may seem like a dumb question, but unless you allow the rpm to increase wouldn't it just give you more overall power? the speed wouldn't change and you may have more power in low but i still don't see the advantage up uping the hp without changing the RPM

i was just thinking of getting a B&S cart engine to put in there around 35hp

yah scott, 35hp cart engine sounds like a plan!
they have rev kit's in them right?
mudbuster has one of thoughs rev kits in a 23hp briggs and it runs like a 2 stroke!!
i cant get away from him on the trails!
