I saw a Black Max IV at a Badlands ride in Attica back in 2001. I can hardly remember, but I thought it was the newer style body with the rectangular headlights. I read someone had said the black ones are older and somewhat rare. I remember that one looking pretty new. It was the only Black Max I have ever seen.

John, Every so often, the factory has a few bodies made up in a special color - could very well have been a new "black" Max. I don't know how one gets one an "off" color.

Mikesmax,
I e-mailed R.I. recently about the black max. According to Carl Bish of Recreatives Ind. who build the Max this machine was a Max II that was produced in the VERY early 1980's. It was powered by a 440 Kawasaki engine and was produced in very limited numbers. As I said recently in another post, I remember reading about these beasts in the "NATVA" newsletter that covered racing events. They were very fast about 60 mph. They could pull wheelies off the starting line. Maybe Richard Clark has pictures of these machines as he seems to have some of the old "NATVA" newsletters. What you seem to have is one of those original machines and it is probably very rare.It seems to me that Max may have been trying to race with the high powered ATTEX"S at that time as ATTEX seemed to dominate racing back then. Keep us posted on how your machine runs!!? O.K.! I would be willing to bet that this isn't going to be a machine that is very trail friendly but I'll bet you'll get a big thrill crossing flat ground.
